    Default Whats Sammys best songwriting?

I've read over the years, where some mags and rock critics have said Sammys lyrics are quite "lame". This, I have always found quite "very wrong" and obvious they haven't properly listened to Sammys catalogue properly or just had no interest.
OK. Its fair to say, through the years, especially on "Livin it up" and on the odd filler the lyrics have been sloppy, but I've always believed that when Sammy has a good big time producer, and has a lot of push behind him, he can come up with some of the best lyrics ever.

I think his best years of creativity were from "Standing Hampton" to "V.O.A". Then on "Marching to mars" his anger came through and his writing was steller.

But heres the songs I think personally are his best lyrically wise through the years -
He was at the top of his game.

    Space station no. 5
    Space age sacrifice
    Silver lights
    Little star/Eclipse
    Red
    I'll fall in love again
    Cant get loose
    Swept away
    Love walks in
    5150
    Right now
    Feelin'
    Little white lie
    Who has the right?
    Leaving the warmth...
    Amnesty is granted
    Returning of the wish
    Serious Ju Ju
    Learning to fall
    Future in the past
    Different devil

    What do others think?
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

Most of the Montrose stuff is really nice. A good bit of the Chickenfoot stuff is very well thought out.

"If I were a potter, I'd make you reel. I'd mold and touch you on my spinning wheel" - Oh Yeah
Most people think that real is the correct spelling and meaning. However, reel as a verb, as in spinning makes more sense. It's so intricately sexy.

"I'm gonna listen to the children. Listen to my friends. Let silence be my church. The song that never ends, come on." - FITP
Again, people think he's saying "science", not silence. It changes the meaning completely and shows significant thought when you realize it's silence.

Here's just a few examples of some of my favorite SH lyrics-
Solo- Salvation On Sand Hill, Psycho Vertigo, The Sun Don't Shine, One Sip, Karma Wheel, Little Bit More
Montrose- The Dreamer, Bad Motor Scooter
For the VH years- Feelin', Don't Tell Me, Deja Vu.
Chickenfoot - Future In The Past, Alright Alright, Lighten Up, Learning To Fall, Down The Drain

One song that I really like, but I'd put in the unfinished column is VHs "Learning To See". I just reread the lyrics. It's a great start, but the lyrics seem to have turned into more of a filler than a full song. It seems incomplete to me.

There are a few songs I wish he'd written better. "Sailin" comes to mind. I really like it until he starts rattling off the names of famous sailors and mentions Jimmy Buffett.... I'm not quite sure Jacques Cousteau belongs in that category either. He was a famous diver, but I'm not sure about the sailing part. Anyhow, you get my point.

According to Sam's book, it was going to be "I want to show you what love can do", but Ed wanted a darker lyric to go with the riff.

Off the top of my head:
    Right Now
    Mine All Mine
    Remember the Heroes
    5150
    Summer Nights
    Deeper Kinda Love
    The Message
    Avenida Revolution

"I Can't Drive 55" because it is a great party tune. The problem is that he goes back to the well too many times.
I don't have a cool signature. Deal with it!

    "Spanked".

It HAS to be "Spanked"! It never fails to make me chuckle...Plus, I have a fondness for CF's "My Kinda Girl" - only because it is somewhat reminiscent of my own life (bar the tattoo, of course!)

For an entire album, I think his best songwriting is Marching to Mars. Would love to have heard that with Van Halen as the band and not the Wabos.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Your 100% right, I forgot that. Wasn't it like Carmassi, Harms and I cannot remember the guy on bass duties, with a few guest stars thrown in like Slash?

I have to pull that disc out, haven't listened to it in years, and for a while I wore it out.

I have always preferred pissed off Sammy Hagar to "slip and slide push it in" and "cherries on bananas" Sam.
