I've posted this before. Where the hell is it. I'm tired of my 24k gold VH1 version being lonely. It was supposed to have come out some time ago. I'm holding off on buying the re-mastered version so I can get the gold one. Anyone have any clues???

there was some discussion that the DCC company that produces the gold discs went bankrupt.

i can't confirm this, but i think 1984 was supposed to be out already, right?

kinda sucks. i think that company did a great job.

    VanEdge,

What is the difference, if any, between the 24k gold disc and the new remaster of Van Halen 1? Or would the sound be basically the same?

the gold discs were not done or supervised by VH as far as i can tell.
the gold discs are EXCELLENT - make no mistake. they are produced from the original masters, and often you can hear unedited versions of songs, longer fade outs, etc. this happened on the U2 gold discs i have.

however, these new wb remasters are absolutely the best sounding van halen recordings ever produced. there is no question about it. it's not a matter of opinion.

Frankly I don't notice much difference between my Gold Disc VH1 and the remastered VH1. In fact I think the vocals are richer on the Gold Disc. Just my opinion of course.

it's definitely not as apparent as orig. vs. either the gold or the new remasters.

i'll do a wave analysis of those if you guys want.

I agree with Brett, I think the 24k disc sounds a lot richer than the remastered VH1. I bought them both, and while they're both improved over the original, I think the overall sound is better from the 24k disc.

i just did a comparison of the first chorus of runnin' with the devil from the gold disc and the new remaster.

the new remaster beats the shit out of it, sonically speaking. i have sent brett a jpeg of the waveforms for you guys to see.

the gold disc is awesome, absolutely, but the new remasters are just that much better.

i can send brett or goo the mp3 of this if you guys wanna hear them back to back.

now, i can totally understand if you dig the gold disc. to be honest, i have a pair of studio monitors that are meant to give exceptional sonic clarity, so the differences in these recordings is really apparent to me.
the waveforms, though, offer an important visual representation, and are proof-positive of how much the sound has been improved.

i'm so freakin' psyched over these things!!!

one more thing: the gold discs, while not having as good a color resolution in the artwork, definitely wins out packagewise. they include ALL the original artwork - even the labels from the LPs.

    thanks, brett.

i guess we don't need a gold disc considering VH did some freakin' great job on their own.
    pretty cool, huh?
