    Default Another Rolling Stone Snub

50 greatest live acts - right now:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...t-now-20130731

I get the Springsteen thing, because like or hate him, he puts on a hell of a show.

I never understand the infatuation with Neil Young.

There are some notable missing live acts (right now) besides Van Halen.

Either way, I know Rolling Stones sucks. But you clicked on this thread right? Because it's fun to complain about them. I think when Eddie made 7 on the guitarist list last year, it had a lot to do with Interscope and selling records...now that they are done with Interscope as some have alluded to...no support/love for Van Halen. It's so ridiculously transparent, isn't it?

Well, firstly, Springsteen absolutely deserves to be at no.1 whether you love him or loathe him. As much as I love The Stones they should not be so high tbh and I was glad to see Muse were not too high for simply having a good light show.

Van Halen and The Killers are obvious omissions, maybe Dave's high register counted against them?

Ok, I couldn't help myself, I had to check the list. I seriously didn't know half the bands on there. Either I'm just out of it (probably) or RS is just completely useless (most definitely). I had a good laugh when Leonard Cohen was even on the list, but ahead of Beyonce?. I'm no Beyonce fan at all but she can perform...Cohen is a fuckin corpse on stage. Neil Young at #5, Arcade Fire #4...who the EFF is Arcade Fire? It really is a train wreck of a magazine but oh so fun to laugh at.

not sure it's a snub to be honest. If they're gonna include all kinds of music then i would hope there'd be 50 acts who put on a better show than VH in 2013.

Arcade Fire is a known band. Grammy's and chart success. According to Wikipedia, they've sold a good amount of albums. Whether or not they put a good live show, I have no idea.

I think DLR's current live singing doesn't really warrant a top 50 position when it comes to concert performances. There are songs that Dave can't sing anymore... and they're still in the setlist. So, no, I'm not really shocked.

A band that has only performed 6 times and only 2 times in the US isn't in the top 50? What a conspiracy.

I also don't think it's a snub. If it was an all-time list I would say it's a snub...but frankly today's VH can't hold a candle to the VH from 78-84 imo. "Putting on a show" isn't really something they do any more, is it?

The Springsteen thing I've never understood. I've tried to watch some clips of him and it just sounds like a guy up there bellowing with veins popping out of his neck for hours. Not sure how anyone can stand it. Springsteen is bereft of melody to my ears.

I would probably put Prince #1...so at least he is at #2 for them. He has not lost a step. He is still comparable to how he was in the early 80s...a big contrast to VH if you want to gauge how far VH has fallen off. Same with Paul McCartney....that guy is amazing.

Also interesting to me that RS has somehow embraced Madonna over the years while snubbing acts like VH repeatedly. She somehow managed to get on their good side. Surprising to see Taylor Swift on the list too.

Neil Young...that's a great performer? I guess a lot of this is based on you being a fan of the music. If you like the music, the show is probably always going to be a "good show".

Prince has put on 4 of the best concerts I've ever been to. I guess it pays to be completely nuts!

Springsteen is still basically the same show, he only looks slightly older, but it's not a huge change. I think he's a high energy performer. He's excellent live.

    Lets face it people:

Van Halen has really messed up.
Dave's voice is really pitiful right now.

The whole band lacks their original charisma and energy.

Wolfie adds a weird and lame stage presence to the band.

They are not rock stars any more - they are beginning to go into the has been category.

I mean I love Van Halen - the original and the Sammy years.

This era is incredibly lame on stage I just don't get it - I wish VH would go down the "we are great musicians path" rather than trying to be has been stadium rockers it just doesn't work anymore.

Aside from some of the bands and artists I could give a shit about on that list, most of them that I do know and have seen *are* worthy of being ranked as among the best live acts from the last 10 years. Springsteen is without a doubt the greatest living rock n' roll performer still plugging away. On this tour alone which has been going on for the last couple of years, he's played about 200 different songs in a set that normally runs between 30 - 35 songs per night and there's usually about 10 different songs every show.

I think Prince has taken a big nosedive in the quality and consistency of his live show the past few years especially since he started mentoring that "girl group" and not even bothering to play guitar. The Prince show I saw in '85 during the Purple Rain tour was 1000x better than the last tour even though the guy still "has it."

For the last 30 years, The Rolling Stones have been more arena/stadium spectacle than a compelling live act. The fact that they have the deepest and greatest catalog of songs of anyone on the planet is what sells them.

Of the rock bands listed, Arcade Fire and Muse are probably the best "new" live bands of the past decade. Very different kind of shows - Muse is big time arena rock with a huge and very cool production while Arcade Fire just has loads of talent and charisma and you leave their show thinking you have seen something really special and uplifting. I've seen Nine Inch Nails maybe a dozen times from '91 right up to their very last show in LA last year and they *were* always really good. What I've seen of the current incarnation looks pretty lame though.

Of the omissions, I would agree Van Halen *still* belongs up in the top 25 as some of the bands mentioned haven't toured in the last 4 or 4 years, Rush and Pearl Jam (who I don't really care for but realize they put on a solid show) should be higher up on that list and Iron Maiden, Gogol Bordello and Killing Joke should be in there.

Oh... Tom Petty? Love his music but he's pretty dull as a live act. Radiohead? Pink Floyd on downers.
