Default Hacker Forces Colin Powell To Deny Affair

Ex-Secretary of State told foreign diplomat to delete her e-mails

AUGUST 1--As a notorious hacker seeks to distribute “very personal” e-mails sent to Colin Powell by a female Romanian diplomat, the retired general is denying that he engaged in an extramarital affair with the woman while he served as Secretary of State, though he recently advised her to delete all their online exchanges, The Smoking Gun has learned.

In a statement addressing his relationship with Corina Cretu, a member of the European Parliament who previously held a series of senior posts in the Romanian government, Powell, 76, wrote that he has known Cretu for about 10 years, having first met her “when I was the Secretary of State and she was an assistant to the President of Romania. We occasionally attended the same diplomatic and international meetings.”

Powell, who served in President George W. Bush’s cabinet for four years, said that he kept in touch with Cretu, 45, by e-mail after leaving the State Department in January 2005. “Over time the emails became of a very personal nature, but did not result in an affair. Those type of emails ended a few years ago. There was no affair then and there is not one now,” Powell added.

Powell issued his statement to TSG after a reporter sought to question him about the content of Cretu’s 2010 and 2011 correspondence, which was posted online this week. “This note responds to a series of posts placed by a ‘hacker,’” Powell wrote.

While TSG did not mention Cretu by name or refer to a possible romance, Powell’s swift denial of an affair--especially one possibly conducted with an official of a foreign government while he served as America’s chief diplomat--was clearly prompted by the sensitive nature of the e-mails sent to his personal AOL account. And likely by a desire on Powell’s part to address any appearance of impropriety, especially in light of last year’s crash-and-burn by retired General David Petraeus.

In the “very personal” correspondence cited by Powell, Cretu calls him the love of her life and describes a relationship that spanned more than a decade. The 2010-2011 e-mails would leave most readers with the clear impression that the forlorn Cretu is writing about the twilight of a lengthy romance.

As reported here in March, Powell’s e-mail and Facebook accounts were illegally accessed by “Guccifer,” the hacker who has spent the last eight months breaking into the online accounts of Clinton, Bush, and Obama administration officials; former FBI agents; defense contractors; Bush family members and friends; and assorted public figures, including journalist Carl Bernstein, author Candace Bushnell, and John Doerr, the billionaire venture capitalist.

Immediately after the Powell hacks, “Guccifer” sent some of the pilfered e-mails and photos to a variety of news outlets (and the anti-secrecy site cryptome.org, which posted the material).

This week--four months after the online break-ins--“Guccifer” returned, like a nasty rash, to continue vexing Powell.

Armed with the Cretu correspondence, which “Guccifer” apparently copied during the initial AOL incursion, the hacker uploaded 10 e-mails sent to Powell and a variety of photos to Google Drive. Then, in a bid to expose the material directly to Powell’s Facebook followers (his page has nearly 87,000 “likes”), the hacker posted a message on Powell’s wall that included a link to the Google Drive page.

The posting--which was subsequently spotted by Powell’s staff and deleted--had been uploaded via the Facebook account of a retired general with whom Powell had once worked. After hacking into the man’s account, “Guccifer” masqueraded as the general when making his post to Powell’s Facebook wall.

While in control of the second general’s Facebook account, “Guccifer” also posted an update to the man’s page that included a photo of Cretu and a link to the Google Drive collection of e-mails and photos. As of this morning, the post remains on the page of the former military commander, who did not return TSG phone messages. Oddly, five of the man’s friends have “liked” the post made in his name by “Guccifer.”

When told that the update and Google Drive link remained publicly available on the second general’s Facebook page, Powell replied in an e-mail that, “Yes, we haven’t been able to reach him.”

Early this morning, “Guccifer” added a second update to the general’s Facebook page. It contained a new Google Drive link that led to e-mails and photos--some dating back eight years--that were lifted from Cretu’s newly hacked Yahoo e-mail account.

The online bandit copied correspondence exchanged earlier this week by Powell and Cretu about “Guccifer” ransacking Powell’s AOL account and attempting to disseminate e-mails and photos via Facebook links. At one point, Powell warned Cretu that the hacker “may have lots of your emails, maybe not.” He then advised, “so best to delete all between us.”

In an e-mail to TSG, Powell explained, “In light of what was happening it seems obvious to ask Ms. Cretu to delete emails.” Referring to personal photos Cretu e-mailed to him, Powell wrote, “She sent photos on a regular basis. Lots of family photos with her nieces, who she adores, family reunions, formal business sessions, her wedding and some bathing suit photos… Never anything improper.”

“This was a friendship that electronically became very personal and then back to normal,” said Powell.

In his statement, Powell--who has been married to his wife Alma for 50 years--reported that he and Cretu “remain friends and are in touch,” but that they have only seen each other “once or twice” over the past eight years. On those occasions, Powell noted, Cretu traveled to Washington, D.C. for “group conferences” that he also attended. At a July 2011 conference, Cretu and Powell stood next to each other in a group photo.

Cretu, who did not respond to a TSG e-mail seeking comment about the “Guccifer” hack, was married late last year. After serving as a presidential advisor and a senator in the Romanian parliament, Cretu, a member of the country’s Social Democratic party, was elected in 2007 to the European Parliament. One of 32 representatives from Romania, Cretu is vice-chair of Parliament’s “Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.”

When she worked as a presidential advisor, Cretu was part of the Romanian delegation that greeted Powell and President George W. Bush when they visited Bucharest in 2002. Photos on Cretu’s web site show her with Powell and First Lady Laura Bush and Powell and Adrian Nastase, then Romania’s prime minister. The following year, Cretu accompanied Romania’s president in meetings with Bush and Powell. In March 2004, she was part of the Romanian delegation that traveled to Washington for a ceremony, overseen by Powell, marking the former Soviet bloc nation’s accession to NATO.

In his statement, Powell noted that after leaving the State Department, he frequently gave Cretu “advice on the prospects of finding a position with the UN or other international organizations.” He concluded, “I am pleased that she is having a successful career. I am pleased that she is recently and happily married.”

I wish Colin Powell was the first black president, he is a much better cut of a man than this liar we got short changed with. Even if he banged this woman like a screen door in a hurricane.

Is there a scandal looming that could possibly tarnish Dave's Dreidel's reputation at the Links?

Seriously though, thank God I had my psycho female co worker experience long before the advent of texting and camera phones.

Inside Colin Powell’s hot and heavy e-mails

Maybe he should’ve been less diplomatic.

Colin Powell just couldn’t give his flirty Romanian pal the heave-ho, despite her numerous needy rants at the bitter end of their racy relationship, the pair’s hacked e-mail exchanges show.

Instead, the married Powell, 76, continued to keep the line open throughout 2010 and 2011, as European Parliament member Corina Cretu, 46, whined in her e-mails about their past cyber-flirtations — and scolded him for being slow and icy in his replies.

The former secretary of state urged Cretu to delete all the suggestive e-mails as soon as he discovered that the notorious hacker “Guccifer” was snooping around his AOL account.

In one clumsily typed e-mail from February 2011, Cretu taunts the four-star general with an apparent reference to an R-rated suggestion he had made to her sometime in the past.

“Sip a glass of wine with me, as you used to tell me — advising me to lie neck [naked] on tha sofa,” Cretu reminds him in her tortured English.

“After five six year ust remove, I will be clean and virgin, isn’t it?” she snipes about his cold shoulder.

“It will be a gift, isn’t it, to celebrate that I not anymore here,” she pouts.

Powell has conceded the e-mails with Cretu were “very personal” but insists he has remained faithful to his wife, Alma, to whom he has been married for more than 50 years.

“We occasionally attended the same diplomatic and international meetings,” Powell has said in a written statement, acknowledging that he knew Cretu during his tenure at the State Department.

“Over time, the e-mails became of a very personal nature, but did not result in an affair,” Powell said. “Those type of e-mails ended a few years ago. There was no affair then, and there is not one now.”

Guccifer’s hacked Powell e-mails leap from 2005 to Dec. 24, 2010, when Cretu e-mails her cybercrush, “I want you to be happy.”

“Is a sense I believe that you also care about me . . . But you are now completely by your own, without letting me any chance to talk to you at leas for a few minutes,” she writes Powell.

“Now-you send me from 19 dec ‘Merry Chrimas and Happy Year’, so I should undertsatnd that we don’t talk each during this period,” she complains.

“Is first time when you tell me, dplomatically, of course, that is better not to speak until the holiday?

“Have you such a hearth to leave ne here alone, thibkibg of you, without enjoying your gifts... your small gesters or gifts, which once was vwery powerful, without your words every day,” she pleads.

She would see him just once more, in July 2011, when she traveled to DC for a conference.

“Thank you, Colin,” she e-mailed during the visit.

“You look so well. We are at the State Department, other memories. Do you think would be too much to have a coffee together thses days?”

“I don’t need to attend all the program. Would be nice to chat a bit,” she wrote her old cyber-flame.

She later blogged a photograph of herself in a trim black cocktail dress, standing with her left arm around a beaming Powell’s back and her right hand holding his wrist.

“General Colin Powell . . . is an old and good friend of Romania,” she blogged.

Four months after the conference, she called him “the love of my life” in yet another e-mail but told him she has finally found a more “reaistc love” and is getting married.

DIPLO-MATES: Colin Powell and Corina Cretu, the Romanian official he exchanged e-mails with.
“I never did something wrong, but I am a perpetual the pyr [payer] of the bill,” she says cryptically.

“Love coulfd endure anything, but wihout reciporocity, nothing is posinnle [possible].”

Most of Guccifer’s hacked-and-released e-mails are from 2010 and 2011, when the bloom is clearly off the rose, at least for Powell, a moderate Republican who has endorsed President Obama.

“This hacker is driving everyone here crazy,” Powell wrote Cretu on July 30 in an e-mail that was itself hacked.

“The hacker gets addresses from my contact list which he got when he hack[ed] into President Bush’s account,” Powell complains. “Our security people have been chasing him for months. He may have lots of your emails, maybe not, so best to delete all between us.”

But their relationship wasn’t always icy.

One e-mail exchange from 2005 shows the staid statesman apparently flirting back.

“Good weather to make you come . . .” Cretu, then the assistant to the president of Romania, wrote to Powell in August 2005, eight months after he left the State Department.

    Powell’s reply?

“You and the weather could make that happen.”

I don't see how this is news. There's absolutely noting in there, zero.

Who wants to make something out of this? The left? The right? Some media wanting to sell copies?

Powell is not even in charge of anything anymore. How would anything he does or doesn't do affect US politics? The guy is 76 and people are looking for a sex scandal? Wtf? Slow news day indeed.

    This thread should be closed.
