    Default 5150 Build Thread

Hey guys, thought I'd share this with you. I decided to build my first guitar, and thought I'd tackle a 5150. It's one of my favorite EVH guitars and I definitely don't have enough for a Mean Street Guitar.

I bought the body (basswood), neck (maple shaft and board), and Licensed Floyd for about $180. I bought some unmarked Schaller minis from Axcessories for $30 (same kind Mean Street uses.) I got a Seymour Duncan 59 from Amazon for $75. As for paint, I'm using Fiesta Red, Arctic White, and Black from ReRanch. ReRanch is excellent for paint. I ordered monday night, and received the paint Friday afternoon. Same goes for everywhere else mentioned.

There are a few inaccuracies with the guitar. The headstock is little off, the neck doesn't have the skunk stripe, and the rear cavity rout is wrong, but for just over $300, it's awesome.

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...tml?sort=2&o=0
The rear cavity for the volume pot is round, and not a parallelogram like the real one.

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...tml?sort=2&o=1
    Correct non-recessed Floyd.

These next shots are after my 3 coats with ReRanch white primer.

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...tml?sort=2&o=6

I sprayed it with 3 coats of ReRanch Arctic White, and I'm letting it dry overnight. Here's some shots of that.

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...ml?sort=2&o=13

The Arctic White is pure white, even though the pictures make it out to be yellowish.

I'm letting the white sit overnight, and I'm gonna tape it up and spray it red early tomorrow morning. In the evening I'll probably try and get the black stripes on there too.

I'm limited to seven images, so I can't show as much as I'd like. Sorry for posting the links, the embedding wasn't working.

Update! I have finished the taping and am almost done with the red. I can't post pics right now, but I'll have them up in a couple hours.

I got it taped and painted red! I let that dry for awhile, and peeled off all the tape! It went super smooth and there's almost no bleed (slight bleed in horns and stripe around edge.) I'm letting this dry overnight and doing the black stripes tomorrow.

Here it is striped before the red

And now here it is with the red drying, and the tape still on

I peeled the tape and it looks great!

To anyone who wants to attempt this build, definitely go with Fiesta Red from ReRanch, it's awesome!

I'll update you guys again tomorrow after the black.

I still have to order the 5150 decals and Kramer logo from Nobozos.

    Default Relicing the 5150?

Some of you may have seen my 5150 build thread (if not, feel free to check it out.) I finished with the red, and peeled the tape. Early tomorrow I'm gonna paint the black stripes, and if it's dry by the end of the day, I may try to start relicing the guitar. I have a couple of questions about relicing this particular guitar, though.
    1) How do I get the black lines to look like they've worn off?
    http://www.southeastguitars.com/siteimages/cody5150.jpg
^^Reference image if you don't know what I mean. See how the black looks like it doesn't go all the way around the side of the guitar, and how it's worn? How can I achieve this effect?
    2) How do I make it look like there has been tape in certain spots?
See above reference pic if you still don't know what I mean. In the spots where Eddie puts his tape to hold the picks, the paint has been chipped/worn off. Can anyone help me with this?

If anyone knows how I can do these things, that would be awesome. Any help is appreciated.

    Bluto,
To get the worn look, your going to need some tape. I recommend something tacky. Fold it over in a cicrcular pattern, similar to the tape size Eddie used, and keep putting it on, then off...to pull some of the paint off. Sanding will work too...just be careful. I seem to remember hearing people on here taking screws and bolts, laying the body down, and dropping them onto it, to give it that worn look. Be inventive. BTW, what are you using to plug your neck holes, so the paint doesn't get in there?
Eddie must think I'm a BOZO to want to drop THAT much on one of his new Charvel Guitars!

    Oh ya,
Some people will use a razor to pull some of it off, sometimes a metal scouring pad if memory serves me correctly? maybe someone else with chime in and give you better pointers?

When I did mine a few years ago, I used nothing but a small little screw diver type tool with a pointy nail in it and .0000 steal wool. I printed out some pictures of the original & some of the better clones and just tried to copy the scratches and marks on it. I used the steal wool to sort of blend down some of the scratches (not all) to make them look like they have been there a while. I also used the steal wool on the black stripes too as well as the nail tool.

Start on the back of the guitar where all the wood is exposed, because if you screw up a little, thats probably the best spot to do it... I wish I thought of that when I did mine. There are a few mistakes on mine, but it doesn't bother my too much. I've still got to do a few things on mine, too. Like the smoke burns and a bit more dirtying it up a bit...

If you have nothing nice to say about Eddie Van Halen, you're at the right website. - Me (A few years ago)

"People take Van Halen much more seriously than we do" - David Lee Roth (1980's)

"I don't sit on the end of your bed while you're trying to make a living" - David Lee Roth (1988)

"For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it."- Edward Van Halen

"A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can't compare them. It's like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person."-Edward Van Halen

I rigged up my body to paint it with strings and ceiling hooks. The top two neck holes have the string running through it, so the paint can't get in there. I never thought to plug the bottom two, but if I find any paint in there, I can probably use either a nail or a small screwdriver to scrape it out.

Another update! I finished with the black and revealed the stripes! Here's some pics of it now

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...5877d.jpg.html

    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...ca428.jpg.html
    http://s1312.photobucket.com/user/Bl...8cd45.jpg.html

The neck is a very tight fit, and I was able to put it slightly in the pocket for the last pic.

On the front, it may look like the bottom stripe is messed up, or "bent" but if you look at pictures of the real 5150 (without the space tape) then you can see that Ed made this mistake in painting. I just wanted to replicate as much as possible.

Thanks man. The 5150 is one of my favorite guitars, so when I decided to build it wasn't too hard to choose what to build.

Eddie sounds fantastic in this video. I love his little smile into the camera around the 43 or 44 second mark.
