Yeah..I mean some of the comments were pretty harsh, but put into account these technical factors:
    He's NOT Eddie Van Halen.
    He's playing with 11's.
    He's playing with single coils.
And...it's not a high gain amp he's playing through here.
I think it's cool and takes balls no matter who you are to play one of your idols music in public and pull it off. Especially one of the caliber of Eddie!

He's playing at a faster tempo than Eddie. Also never uses tapping in PJ songs, so maybe his technique is a bit rusty.
He gets an A for effort, though. Pearl Jam is a great band, wish there were more like them.

    Default I was there

I don't listen to PJ even though I really liked their first 2 records when they came out and I have seen them a lot in their early days.
They put on killer shows when they played clubs.I lost interest for years but the show at Wrigley Field was a cool experience especially with the 2 hrs rain delay. The next night I seen VH in Wisc. so I got to hear ERUPTION 2 nights in a row with over 80,000 people combined.
    BTW mother love bone rules!!

AWESOME!!!!! Ed deserves more props! He was and is the inspiration for so many guitarists. He came along just when he was needed Jimmy Page and Zep were slowly going down and Ed came along and showed everyone a fresh new way at looking at things. It is great to see this!

I love that video. Shows exactly how people still get excited about Eruption to this day. (That and the 14 year old girl going viral with it)

A Pearl Jam audience no less. One of the least likely audiences to cheer for "80s guitar excess" type playing. One could say, if it is possible, that Eruption is the one track that is responsible for the 80s music that Pearl Jam audiences were rebelling against. Yet...they cheer Eruption. (There are other PJ videos where he plays at least part of Eruption to cheers as well)

Side note: I wonder if this causes any friction in the band? In some of those videos Eddie Vedder looks like he is "fake smiling".

Well, frankly ... I've played Eruption better than that haha

But it's cool. I like McCready's, he's got his own style and is a good songwriter. Nice to see them acknowledge their influences ... even if Van Halen ain't exactly "cool" to some in the alternative crowd. (BTW ... Is alternative music still a genre? God I'm getting old haha)

Haha, yeah it's still a genre, but it's a bit of a joke since Foo Fighters and Muse are constantly listed under Alternative, yet they're about as popular as modern rock bands get.

McCready is one of the best to come out of the 90's. He uses the same blues scales as many others have, but they fit so well with the songs and have a special feel to them. And his riffs, in my opinion, are probably second only to Jerry Cantrell (again, just talking about 90's guitarists).

I wonder how many people in the audience realize what it is they are hearing. I wonder if they think that he made that up to play at shows.

Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready went to see VH last year, they are fans, they have played ATBL and RWTD several times on their shows.
