Default McDonalds Tells Workers How to Budget on Their Earnings

    July 16, 2013

Two mega corporations--McDonalds and Visa--have partnered up to tell workers at the fast-food restaurant how to successfully budget on the meager wages they are paid. The suggestions, though, have little bearing in reality, as Think Progress’ Annie-Rose Strasser notes.

“You can have almost anything you want as long as you plan ahead and save for it,” McDonalds soothingly assures their employees.

    http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/...D_Journal2.pdf

But workers at McDonalds make an average of $8.25 an hour. The suggested budget, published by the company on a website, leaves room open for a second job. And it also says that employees could spend $20 a month for health care, which is an extremely low estimate; $0 for heating; and $600 for rent, another low-ball estimate, particularly for those who live in expensive cities.

To add insult to injury, the budget is directed at employees who would need to work a million hours to earn as much as the CEO of McDonalds, as Think Progress states.

In a statement to Think Progress, McDonalds defended their website. “The samples that are on this site are generic examples and are intended to help provide a general outline of what an individual budget may look like,” the company said.

that's a fantastic idea and one that should be part of high school curriculum. Nothing at all wrong with this.

Dear God, people will bitch about anything. If you don't like the budgeting information that they are giving you FOR FREE, don't use it.

Jesus, is it really that hard?

what's to bitch about? this is a case of a corporation actively putting in place a program that will help their employees make good life choices

If anything they may be shooting themselves in the foot by showing their employees that they are on a dead end path unless they develop some other work skills and get themselves into management or other work...

but I think most McD employees know this already

I regularly recruit for various positions that require a credit check. Some of the acceptable ceilings are stunning, like no more than 7 accounts in collections and/or $10,000 of combined outstanding delinquent debt.

It's sad how many people can't pass it.

I know a lady who makes more than I do and is in a similar boat. She is about my age and has a terrible credit score. She is just now starting to get her finances back in order through the help of a non-for-profit agency. Three weekends ago she went out and bought a pool.

CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I have to deal with doing background checks on tenants and I always tell them that at this stage in their life the most valuable thing they own is their credit report

I know anecdotal evidence doesn't always illustrate trends, but here I go regardless: I'm in a rock band with three other guys. We are all at varying places, economically speaking.

It never fails that the one of us who's in the toughest spot (had to move in with parents, for example) is the one who shows up to each rehearsal and gig with a bag from Wendy's, McD's, Taco Bell, etc.

The rest of us kinda get on him about budgeting money, and his response is along the lines of, "Dude, this was a five-dollar meal."

Of course, then we have to do the math with him - number of cheap meals per week plus the cost of driving to get the food, equals around 30 clams a week. Times 52 weeks is more than $1,500. We tell him to eat bologna sandwiches from home, take $100 per month, sock it into a standard mutual fund. (This being what I started to do in college, and this being how I put a nice down payment on my first house.)

We haven't gotten through to him, yet. But every once in a while, I think we crack his stubbornness (guess what instrument he plays!)

Regardless, yes; some people are in dire need of basic budgeting help (especially regarding credit cards). This is a good idea.

at the college i go to, depending on the professor you take, they cover 4 or 5 classes worth of money management/budgeting.

but it takes someone in college/ your currents dead end job to teach it?

It should start, at least here, when you are of age to get a job. dunno what it is in Canada, but here- again, depending on the job it starts from 15-17 years old. so that would be like the beginning of high school i guess. would have been great if i got a chance to take it when i was in high school. i know i wouldn't be in the boat i am now.

I think it should be part of the high school curriculum every year.. Up here most kids start getting part time job at about 14 or 15. I had my first one at 12 I think though.

Look on the bright side. Our schools teach how to correctly put a condom on. Who cares about fiscal responsibility!

Arguably, the ability to put a condom on correctly most definitely impacts upon one's potential finances!
