Default Van Halen's dismal concert sales

Just read on Ultimate Classic Rock website where Bon Jovi.. Bon fucking phony Jovi is the top rock concert grossing act of the year. With total sales of $142mm over 60 shows, they are by far the best grossing band in terms of total revenue.

It just chaps my ass that the mighty Van Halen are not at the top of that list. Springsteen and the Stones did great per show and would be far ahead had they played as many shows as that other band.

I respect the band should do what they want to / are capable of, but when you see that shit band doing so well, it just screams how starved our demographic is for live rock shows. If our guys are not up to it, then so be it.. But..Damn..

Our guys should be dominating right here, right now..

they haven't even done a show in the US this year have they?

I mean I'm pretty sure the promotional jolt that ADKOT would get from a tour is kind of over so unless they have a new product maybe it's for the best for now, do another disk then get back out there.

how many tours have they had since Dave got back together with them? I mean they were still billing the shows last year as a "reunion" tour in the commercials I heard last year, they really gotta drop that if they come back around IMHO.

Van Halen has barely worked this year so I hate that Bon Jovi is pulling in big numbers because they did work. Huh?

apparently lots of people think they don't suck.

Thread title (and thread) really make no sense.

The Van Halen boys have done a lot of irreversible damage to their product the last 15-plus years. I really don't think you should expect them to outdraw the heavyweights anymore.

Bon Jovi has drawn more than VH for a long time now, probably since the 90's. They are a huge band world-wide, especially in Europe. It's no big deal, who cares really. VH does just fine considering what the band has been through since about 1995...really I'm a bit surprised they are doing as well as they are, realistically they should be doing the casino circuit with the way they treated their fans for so long.

Maybe VH should be opening for Mr. Bon Jovi........AGAIN! Lol

Seriously though, what do you expect here? As others have stated, they haven't hardly done any shows. They should be playing most of ADKOT in my opinion as well, instead of trotting out the old safety net classics. Ed has always said that he wouldn't tour unless they had new material yet here they are, not playing many of them. Go figure.

Concert sales, IMHO, are driven by bands who keep a constant presence in the market and tour/record regularly, even just touring in many cases. Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, or Kiss, these are bands who even when music critics called them irrelevant or outdated through the 90's to today, they continued to go through the grind with minimal breaks.

Van Halen disappeared from the public eye for far too long and hurt their market appeal. Sure, albums like ADKOT would help to resurrect or create new interest, but really they have no one to blame but themselves.

I know we all love our little band but we have to accept that although influential, they just blew it! They blew it in every conceivable way in terms of keeping their presence felt in the general public consciousness. They can make oodles of money and still got what it takes to put out good respectable RocknRoll but the numbers game, media, and promotion will never be there for this band anymore. Its strictly a metaphorical "9 to 5" job for them now. It pays the bills when needed and that's that.

VH has been doing enormous concert business. Everyone has seen the concert industry stats from 2007, 2008, and 2012, right?

And sure, they would be doing even more business if it wasn't for the fact that they've taken a long hiatus and whatnot. So be it.

And of course they've only done 5 shows so far this year.

And, as usual, Bon Jovi remains absolutely huge worldwide. And a lot of us don't fully understand why, even taking into consideration Jon's good looks and their type of pop rock. (Insert Dave's hilarious recent Bon Jovi quote here).

    Nothing new here, right?

I really think cancelling all those shows last year, hurt their momentum. I mean, we realize now it was for Ed's health and I don't blame them for allowing him time to recover and thank goodness he is ok. But I think the way it was handled ticked off a lot of people. The press releases stated "These shows are postponed, not cancelled", but as soon as they played the show in New Orleans, BOOM! All cancelled.

There is way too much heartburn here about where VH ranks in popularity. Whether they are "relevant", whatever the fuck that means.

Van Halen kicks ass. They redefined rock, and their guitarists is, let's face it, basically untouched when it comes to innovation.

It's been more than 30 years. They have a new album that doesn't suck at all. And they are making millions on tour.

There were, are and always will be pop bands and crossover artists that are more popular. But that won't change what you already know.

    Rest easy. Life is good.
