Default What is your main pickup for EVH and other things?

I have tried so many i lost count but right now i am favoring the axis dimarzio set and the dimarzio super d.
I also use a hand wound guitar force eruptor which is outstanding.
The main thing i look for is punch, clarity and sustain and all of these have a bit more of those elements for my rig. I play charvel san dimas and jackson soloist guitars.
Whats you primary pu of choice? and what guitar is it loaded in?

I have the EVH Franks in two guitars and the new EVH Wolfgangs in two others. Three of them are the axes I play the most...my VH Rasta (Frank), my Warmoth Super Strat (Wolfgang), and a two-humbucker homemade Super Strat (Frank, SD Jazz in the neck). The other Wolfgang is in the VH Bumblebee I'm working on.

I also have a Bareknuckle VH II in one of my Kramers that is very nice too.

My paint splatter 84 Kramer Pacer which was my main guitar for a long time has a SD Custom in the bridge that I love. That guitar always sounds good through any setup.

My Charvel So Cal came with a Tone Zone, it's ok, I don't love it...a bit too hot for me.

For EVH sound and for just a general kick-ass humbucker, the EVH Frankenstein pickup is a great choice.

A good choice for a "cover all the bases" pickup is a Seymour Duncan JB. It has never let me down for great tone and versatility for high and low gain applications.

I'm a little partial to a Dimarzio Steve's Special. I've had that pickup in both a Les Paul and a Strat, and it sounded great in both for high gain playing.

The Dimarzio Super Distortion is a great pickup for an outstanding classic rock tone. I like it better in a Les Paul than a Strat.

Other pickups that I've tried, but decided the above pickups were better:
    -SD Custom 5
    -SD Custom Custom
    -Dimarzio Tone Zone
    -SD Pearly Gates
    -Dimarzio Evolution
    -SD Screamin Demon
    -EVH Wolfgang Pickups

All of these pickups were good, but for my style of playing and to my ear, that's how they break down.

Brand new Dimarzio Super Distortion, F-spaced in a strat and regular in my Destroyer...but this is really a function of how it interacts with my Mod 5 Marshall. Great combination for 1st album Van Halen. I came to this pickup and amp strictly from Rockstah who used the Mod 5 with new DSDs and reissue Greenbacks.

As it happens, I can get a pretty good 1984 sound from the '57 Classics in my Gibson '58 reissue Flying V through my Mod 5 Marshall. That said, the DSD/Mod 5 Marshall combination can also do some other tones pretty well...80s Scorpions, 'Departure' era Journey, Ratt, etc.

    .
I had the same experience with the super d, it just seemed to work with my rig best.

All the other pu's i tried or use sound great but the super d was the one
that felt perfect under my fingers with my guitar/amp.
    I this is most important

Bareknuckle VHII for me. It's in a beat to shit purple EVH Musicman. I have around 40 different guitars right now, worked in or owned a music store for twenty years, and have tried just about everything. I'm no clone, but this pickup is great imho.

My main pickup for EVH it's the Malagoli 84, http://www.captadores.com.br/loja/pr...1589-custom_84
It's a Brazilian Brand that makes pickups and some pickup replica.
For other things DiMarzio in general and EMG for heavy stuff.

For EVH stuff, I actually had a pickup a friend made for me years ago...I call it the Quarter Pounder because it is heavy, and actually has slightly larger than average bobbins. I have no idea what magnet is in it other than it being an alnico. I recently retired it though because it's gone microphonic...Probably needs to be re-potted but it was a bang on sounding VH style pickup.

Keeping in mind that I no longer own a 5150, or other high gain amp anymore, and going back to vintage Marshalls..these days I really like the SD Pearly Gates for Roth era.....Kinda stumbled on that through some discussion with TommyWho, but it just sounds right on a lot of that stuff. My tone is not generally like Ed's...I'm not a flashy player, I don't tap really at all, but I do have a similar rhythm style...(It can't help but rub off a bit when you've been listening to your favorite player for some 30 yrs. or so!!) and if I am playing some VH, like DDL, I'm The One, SGMAD etc. it nails it. Good articulation, just the right mids, and has a wicked palm muting thud to it. Not real gainy...Just that souped up PAF type tone that I love.

For Sammy era, I really like the Dimarzio Tone Zone. I've got one in my alder body Explorer style guitar, and man.....Just great sounding in that. Effortless harmonics, sweet low end, and very tight sounding. Both great pickups.
In comparison, I used to be all nostalgic about some of the JB's I've had.
A couple months ago, I asked myself why I got away from JB's.
I swapped out the PG, and put the JB in....Now I remember why I moved away from them. Rolled off they sound dead, and head to head against both the PG, and TZ, on both ends of the spectrum, it simply doesn't hold a candle to either of them across the board.

    Just my two cents.

Does the DiMarzio Super Distortion get a good early VH tone? Like VH1-Fair Warning.

Anyone here using an SD 78? I've got one I'm going to put into my next guitar build but I'm not too familiar with it. I had it briefly in another junky guitar I had just to try it out and it sounded good, but it's just sitting around now waiting to go into my next axe. Any thoughts on the SD 78?

    I personally haven't ever used a 78, but I've heard/read good things about it

    They can.
I have some vintage ones. I tried a new one in the mid 90's, and I don't know if I just got a bum one or not, but I found it was way too hot for VH both past and present. Also real noisy. My old ones are great sounding, but their a bit too microphonic now for live situations. I record with them often though. I should really put some stuff up. I play through vintage Marshall's as I said earlier.
Don't know how much it helps you guys who are still running high gain architecture amps, but through my stuff, they sound very early VHish.
