Default Preteen Heavy Metal Band UNLOCKING THE TRUTH Destroying Musical Stereotypes

A short short documentary from The Avant/Garde Diaries in which two black kids from Flatbush, Brooklyn — who prefer metal over hip-hop — talk about their mission to rock your socks off as the heavy-metal trio UNLOCKING THE TRUTH can be seen below.

    http://www.blabbermouth.net/news.asp...sitemID=191487

"I don't like doing the same things that everybody else is doing. I want to do my own thing," says 12-year-old Malcolm Brickhouse.

"We do wanna inspire other people," adds his bandmate, 11-year-old Jarad Dawkins. "Don't let nobody push you down, be free, do what you want to do."

In 2007, Brickhouse and Dawkins started a metal band known as TEARS OF BLOOD. They have since joined forces with bassist Alec Atkins in UNLOCKING THE TRUTH, which regularly busks in Times Square, where they say the bucket fills fast.

Preteen Heavy Metal Band UNLOCKING THE TRUTH Profiled In CNN Report (Video)

    December 29, 2013

Victor Blackwell of CNN recently sat down with UNLOCKING THE TRUTH — a heavy metal band from Flatbush, Brooklyn made up of African American pre-teen boys — to talk about their mission to rock your socks off. Check out his report below.

"Heavy metal is in our blood because this is what we like to do," UNLOCKING THE TRUTH's Jarad Dawkins told Paper magazine. "Heavy metal is the music that lifts us up when we are down. Heavy metal is the music to get all our emotions out. This music is everything to me. Japanese animated TV shows and wrestling are the reasons why this music is in our blood. The music in the background inspired us to play metal."

"I don't like doing the same things that everybody else is doing. I want to do my own thing," added his bandmate Malcolm

In 2007, Brickhouse and Dawkins started a metal band known as TEARS OF BLOOD. They have since joined forces with bassist Alec Atkins in UNLOCKING THE TRUTH, which regularly busks in Times Square.

"I do see us having a unique purpose," said Jarad. "Our music has this good message for all people that feel like they are being bullied, or people who want to be free. I think that our music is for everybody."

"The message I want to convey in my music is to be free, do what you want to do, and get back up if you get pushed down," added Malcolm. "If you're following others, then you're not being yourself and it's okay to be different."

Young Metal Band UNLOCKING THE TRUTH Signs With SONY

    July 13, 2014

According to the New York Daily News, UNLOCKING THE TRUTH — the heavy metal band from Flatbush, Brooklyn made up of three African American boys, 13-year-old guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13-year-old bassist Alec Atkins and 12-year-old drummer Jarad Dawkins — has inked a guaranteed two-album deal with Sony. The group will reportedly receive $60,000 to record the first disc and possibly as much as $325,000 for the second CD. Sony also has an option to release four more albums from UNLOCKING THE TRUTH that could push the label's financial investment to around $1.7 million ($325,000 for the second album, $400,000 for the third, $450,000 for the fourth and $550,000 for the fifth). It should be noted, however, that the band will only see the real money after an initial $60,000 advance if their debut album sells more than 250,000 copies, a prospect that seems highly unlikely in an age of diminishing record sales.

UNLOCKING THE TRUTH, which is now managed by "Welcome Back, Kotter" co-creator Alan Sacks , has already played the Coachella festival and has supported GUNS N' ROSES. In addition, the band has appeared in a national ad campaign for Verizon Wireless.

"It's so exciting. We're jumping over the moon," says Jarad's mother, Tabatha Dawkins. "What started out as play dates went to Times Square and now this. It's been one great thing after another."

An UNLOCKING THE TRUTH book about the band's rise to success will be released by Penguin around Christmas, and a documentary about the group's experiences is also in the works.

Derrick Green from SEPULTURA told SPIN magazine last year that he found UNLOCKING THE TRUTH on a blog and felt an immediate sense of connection. "When I was growing up, there weren't a lot of black kids listening to metal music or hardcore music," he said. "I would get harassed by other black people and questioned all the time about why I liked this style of music and why was I trying to be white. I was told that black people didn't listen to this style of music. Even back then, it sounded just as ignorant as it does now. I didn't hate them for their stupidity, but it only pushed me to be where I'm at today." Of UNLOCKING THE TRUTH's potential to be a mainstream success, Green said: "Kids can do anything. If they believe in something strong enough and have the passion and drive, yes."

UNLOCKING THE TRUTH credits bands such as METALLICA, SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED, CHELSEA GRIN, MOTIONLESS IN WHITE and ESCAPE THE FATE as its influences.

That is the most pathetic attempt at backtracking from a racist comment I have ever seen. "Musical Racism"? FYI, that Bon Jovi comment isn't even mine. Let's cut to the chase, you compared these boys to apes with your "Dawn Of The Planet Of ha ha" comment. I called you on it, and you don't like it. Your post was unnecessary and fuckin' racist.

If you don't like that I called you on it, that's fine. However, don't try to equate that with someone not liking Bon Jovi because that's just cowardly and pathetic.

You're the one who needs to get over yourself. Yeah sure, that disgusting age old racist slur you used about three kids was all in good fun. You use Eddie Van Halen as your defense?
