    Default The problem with Mike

The recent discussions about various replacements for Mike over the years and his contributions made me think of the root of Ed's problem with him, IMHO.

Ed fucked up by making Mike an equal partner. Dumb to make Mike and Al equal partners. I understand the part with Al, it's his brother and they jam 24/7.

Outside of a few (Rush comes to mind) I struggle to see where any percussion section deserves equal split with the feature performers (Lead singer, lead guitarist, writers).

As the band popularity grew, Ed came around to realizing he fucked up and mix in piles of coke, people (Val) whispering in his ear that "your paying him too much" and you can see how his attitude changed towards Mike.

I struggle why Dave & Neal Monk let this happen as they were the business minds in the band. Although bad record deal and splits speak to their poor business decisions.

No fault of Mike, he took the deal offered him and more than did what he was asked to do with a great, team player attitude. Hard to unwind a deal after it is established without allot of heartburn (see 2004).... Sure am glad he stayed

If I was in a band as a youngster just starting out doing clubs, etc. I would demand an equal share or hit the road.

So what if MA came over everyday and jammed with Ed and Al. Would it have made a difference? Hell no. Forget MA, Al was the luckiest guy in that band just for sharing the same DNA. Great sound from his snare but I never have bought that he deserved an equal share.

For the early years, it was pretty easy to have a 4 way split - they were in debt to WB. Here's your fair share of debt, Mike.

After a few more albums, debts repaid and band bank accounts fattening, then they want to re-structure the deal.

How is that fair? The business side of it can kill things. Sickens me to see the 3/4 Black Sabbath reunion and know Bill Ward is willing to play (but there could be other reasons he isn't playing, who knows).

God I don't want to get dragged into this but nothing is going on.

I don't believe any bass player or drummer should get an equal share if they are not contributing to songwriting. Coming up with a bass line underneath an already established guitar part isn't songwriting. Coming up with a kick drum pattern the same.

Mike and Alex both were lucky that Eddie, Dave and Sammy were not collecting 80% of the take.

That said it has been mentioned that Alex does tell Eddie which riffs are cool and offers suggestions. So maybe he gets an extra 5% for being his brother and doing that.

I will say Mike probably contributes next to nothing for songwriting since I think he has one or two credits with Chickenfoot. I mean if Sammy didn't throw him a bone in CF, then it appears that he probably didn't do much in VH and was lucky (like Alex) to be watching his bank account increase.

Just got done doing a long ass search through Main and Mike's forum. Seems like this topic has been touched on a bit, here and there in the past.

Mike is worthless. Poor guy has been getting up every day of his life, looking in the mirror and dealing with it. He's a winner in my book.

I think good-old fashioned jealousy played a part in this as well. Mike took that equal share and made a nice fortune with it. He never seemed to need more money as the years went on because of financial ruin etc. He was involved with his high school sweetheart and if you look at some of early pics of them he is a lot of times not with them. I believe he has said that he still has his first dollar that he made with VH. He was definitely the "stable" one in that band and never had the ups and downs of life that we know about like the others. Some people can't stand seeing others happy.

There are different payouts for touring, recordings, songwriting, etc. I think everyone performing on a band tour or as an integral part of a band recording should get an equal share. But the songwriter(s) should get separate royalties for that aspect of it, if the song is so great that people want to license it. Just saying a songwriter should always get a bigger share of everything isn't fair if the act is being presented as a BAND. VH is a band, even Ed always says that. It's not sold to us as "Eddie and The Singer and other people who can still stand working with them". It's Van Halen the band.

    And yes I'm a drummer! :P

Ask the IRS, they will tell you their opinion
Ask Janie, she will tell you MORE THAN the others in the band

Mike is classy, Al is Al and had his own share of $$ fuckups (IE, John Entwhistle type situations), and Ed managed to blossom into a substance abusing, controlling prick with a self confidence problem who let his own demons destroy the band (3 times) and himself (numerous times)

    However.........

I love Mike for being reachable and genuine and a "good fit", whatever the problems Ed (or Al, lets not forget how he can manipulate Ed too) had with him

Now, if the SOB's could only add some more US dates this year so we could talk about that on here ............
