While its nice and accurate to say that its all up to the parents to use personal responsibility, that doesn't really change the fact that promotion of junk foods + toys is not a good thing. Even as young kids we are influenced by what we see on TV. Kids are being needlessly indoctrinated into believing that eating at McDonalds is cool and fun. Promoting terrible eating to underdeveloped minds is gutless and pathetic.

It certainly doesn't make the job of parenting any easier, that's for sure.

    I'm sorry, but McDonald's isn't "tricking" anyone.

Their food is shitty for you, anyone with an IQ over 80 should know that.

"What? - the double bacon cheeseburger, supersize fries, and 64 oz. chocolate milk shake is not healthy! How should I know that?"

It is not McDonald's responsibility to make sure children eat healthy, that is their parents responsibility.

Do we eat at McDonald's? Sure, about once or twice a year as a treat, so obviously we don't have an obesity problem in our house.

    This.

McDonald's is a fast-food business. Not a child care center.

I gotta go with Dave too. Nothing wrong with eating at McDonalds. Just can't do it 5 days a week. Use a few brain cells occasionally. Gotta tell kids no once in awhile. Prepares them for life.

    Their coffee's pretty good tho

My son's Dad does take him to MaccyDee's a couple of times a month. I don't take him - not because I disapprove but because their veggieburgers are almost impossible to eat without covering your clothes in it all, so it's not worth the amount of washing I'd have to do afterwards.

Anyway, I digress. My son definitely goes more than once or twice a year - but he leads a very active lifestyle, unlike a lot of today's kids who just sit on their backsides playing computer games - it's that fact that makes 'fast food' a misnomer if ever there was one, as vast numbers of our children are now too unfit and overweight to move 'fast', even if you paid them.

My comment earlier however still stands: There's a lot of pressure on parents regarding the aggressive selling of all manner of goods and services to our kids and it doesn't make the job any easier.

I have four kids, and I feel absolutely zero pressure, and neither does my wife.

Maybe we are just wired different.

The only pressure I get is from my youngest, 6 years old, and all she wants is the toy from time to time when she sees the commercial on TV. She always gets the same answer, NO. My other 2 teens haven't been in quite some time and have no desire to eat that crap. They would rather go to a real restaurant or have a home cooked meal.

Funny you should mention that. Several years ago, my eldest boy (who was probably 8 at the time) wanted to go to McDonald's after seeing some Happy Meal commercial. I forget what the toy was, but obviously the toy is what he wanted.

I turned it into a teaching moment. I asked him why he thought McDonald's always showed toys, and not Happy Meal food. His young mind latched onto it pretty quick: "Because the food's not good?"

    Bingo, kid!

Then I took him to the dollar store and let him pick three toys of his choosing.

I'm not sure what we ate for dinner that night, but I guarantee it wasn't that awful shit they stuff into Happy Meals.

Your kids never ask you for anything??? Nothing they see advertised on TV??? Nothing their mates have that they'd like too??? They never pester you for anything???

    You are evidently blessed.

My 8 year old DOES ask for stuff on occasions; sometimes I say "No"; sometimes I acquiesce for an easy life; sometimes he'll continue to pester me; sometimes he'll accept a "No" immediately...I thought that was par for the course; obviously not.

Oh - and, guess what?!? I just got back from the McDonalds' drive-through. This thread inspired me to take the sprog for a Happy Meal. And he was as pleased as punch by my decision, bless him! The toy was a plastic fart-machine. It's rather dinky!

Of course they ask for shit, but I either say yes, or say no, and that is the end of it.

The point being made was that parents feel pressured by their kids and advertisements, and we don't feel any pressure at all.

Took my kids iPad from him last week, and I'll give it back to him when I think he behaves well enough for a long enough period of time to deserve it. If he asks for it back, the wait time gets extended.

Some might think that makes me an ass (among other things), but once I or my beautiful bride say no, that's it, discussion is over.

    THANK YOU!

I see it so often where kids negotiate with parents after they get an answer. It drives me nuts. My youngest son's friend does this with his folks all the time, and they cave in constantly. Goes something like this:

Kid: Can we go to McDonald's?
    Parent: No
Kid: Why? I really want to!
Parent: No, it's not in the plan
Kid: But I cleaned my room like you asked. It won't take long. We can go through the drive through.
Parent: (Sigh) OK, but you have to help clean the kitchen when we get back

I want to smack the kid's parents with a frying pan.

The kid was at our house recently and asked for a snack as I was preparing dinner. I told him no. He started in on his negotiations.

I said, "(Kid's name), I already gave you the answer to your question. My answer will not change. If you ask me again, I will call your mom to pick you up, and you will not be allowed back until you understand my rules."

I swear, some people these days consider that a form of child abuse.
