Default 'DLR Band' released 15 years ago today

Fifteen years ago today, David Lee Roth released one of his very best solo albums, DLR Band. Released on June 9, 1998, DLR Band was his fifth full-length album, and probably his most Van Halen-sounding solo album since 1986′s Eat ‘Em And Smile...

Personally, I really love this CD!

This is a great album and John 5 kicks ass all over it.

"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesn’t really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

Dave's vocals are horrendous. The music is excellent. I'm very mixed about this album.

Initially, DLR interviews in Popsmear and Metal Edge magazines in 1997 while promoting his book and Best Of CD, he stated that Carmine Appice and Billy Sheehan were to be involved in this DLR Band.

Eric Zimmerman was evidently one of the canidates for lead guitarist.

After the 1999 tour, Dave reportedly was in contact with Ted Templeman to produce the next album, which of course didn't materialize. Most likely due to the attempted VH reunion sessions in 2000. One of the reported song titles was Chinatown.

Evidently, DLR had also considered a live album around this time period.

This was one of the most expensive cd's I remember buying, as it was an import in my area when it first came out and cost over $30. Then a month or so later it was released domestically at a normal price, but I couldn't of waited that long to get it. I played the hell out of it back then. It was quite a raucous display of good old loud raunchy badass Diamond Dave style Roth & Roll.

Most DLR albums have at least four tunes that I really like and enjoy years later. My favorites from DLR Band are ; Blacklight, Weekend With The Babysitter, Black Sand, and King Of The Hill.

Yes on some songs, but on others, I think he sounds really good. You can tell it was recorded in ten days.

He sounds really good on Little Texas, Wawazat!, Going Places, Black Sand and Weekend with the Babysitter. Those are really cool tunes IMHO as well.

But when he tries to belt it out in that high nasal register, like in Indeedido, it sounds like a tomcat with its balls in a blender.

I like those five songs as much as anything VH related from 1998 onward, the other stuff is either just album material or downright bad.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

This album had greater potential if you ask me, had it better production. I think he was on an independent label at the time and didn't have a whole lot of budget to work with. For me, this is right up there with Eat 'Em and Smile. Liked the material and definitely liked John 5 playing guitar on it. Dave sounded like he was reaching too high for notes here and there as has already been said. He needed to be reigned in when he goes away from his normal range. Some of his better lyrics are on this too.

Relentless and Black Sand are favs off this.

To me it was just a glorified demo and Dave's voice was not at his best.

That's a good way to describe it. Indeedido and Slam Dunk! sound like he likely needed medical attention right after recording. Most of the other cuts are much better.

I always thought Blacklight was a hidden gem.

I'll give you that. If one stomachs their way through songs like Slam Dunk and Blacklight (which I admit are awesome musically but Dave is nails on a chalkboard), and gets to Going Places and Black Sand, they're in for a treat. I think those two are some of the best he's ever recorded.

In your opinion, what constitutes that? What should have been done to make you think differently about it?

The fact that none of it sounds truly polished or "finished." It seems like a collection of Dave's ideas and sounds completely rushed. I am personally turned off by the fact that it was recorded in 10 days. It shows, and not in a good way.

The vocals are hoarse and the songs are really average. I feel with more time, a couple song omissions, and a more crisp production (I dig the idea of wanting it to sound "raw" but to me it just sounds messy), it could have been a much better album. But I think he wanted an answer to Van Halen III, so it was rushed.

I never quite understood the praise this album got. Like I said, songs like Black Sand and Going Places are some of his finest work to date, and some of the rockers are solid (I like Wa Wa Zat! and King of the Hill; Dave nailed the chorus on the latter despite unbearable vocals in the verse). But overall it just sounds like a big misstep to me.

Still way better than Your Filthy Little Mouth or Diamond Dave.
