Default Okay - need a fitness guru to answer a question:

So I've been scouring the inter-webs and have been getting mixed answers (what a shock) - so because I don't know any fitness gurus, I figured I'd turn here.

    Question:
I've heard it takes roughly 30 mins of good cardio to transition from burning sugars, to burning fat.

What defines 'good' cardio? Doing an elliptical for an hour but never breaking a 120 pulse rate isn't something that I think defines 'good' cario.

What 'sustained' heart rate should I be targeting if I aim to do 60 mins of cardio?

Last night I did 60 mins at an average heart rate of 168 with a peak of 183.

    Thanks!

You'll get mixed answers here, too, I'd guess. Mostly because the answer varies from person to person. Factors such as your current level of fitness, your age, health history, resting heart rate, fitness goals and more, will all play into the answer.

In other words, I'm no doctor, but my advice is, don't look to a Van Halen message board when you need your doctor's advice. Book an appointment with your MD and see what he or she says. It's worth the time and money.

The main thing is that you do about 20 minutes of aerobic activity 3 or more times a week, of the sort that gets you slightly out of breath (not wheezing like a steam-train, however), and causes you to break into a sweat. Then you know you're at your optimum for burning calories (and fat).

Last summer I did couch to 5k and used an app for that along with "my fitness pal" app to go from 250to 200 lbs in about 5 mos.

I got a little lazy when it got cold and am now getting the running back on again and going thru about half of the couch 5k program again.

If you are out of your 20s imo doing 30mins of running and walking 3 x per week you can burn off 900 calories at least from that. Get that my fitness pal app and watch your calories that wAy. It'll give you about 1200 calories per day for food. You quickly learn to cut down on sweets breads sodas and get a little more veggie and lean white meat going.

I love bourbon so I've managed to work that into my calories daily. Probably not the smartest but when you live a van halen lifestyle

Antway my point is if you are a grown up(anyone 30+) and you are doing 90 mins a week, then you are doing a million time more than 99% of the people your age and its working!

I met a gentlemen once that was one of the many rescued by Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. Forty years later and he still revered the man.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I just downloaded a fitness app. I've been sedentary the last 5 years and it shows! This couch to 5k sounds interesting...

I do run and use ellipitical machines. There is a reason why organized sports use running as a punishment to their players. You never hear about a team doing a ellipticals when they screw up. The reason why is running/jogging makes you work more.

Jogging for 30 minutes taxes my body much more than doing 60 on the elliptical. My heart rate is usually around 25 beats higher jogging as well. The only reason why I do like ellipticals is that its easier on my 44 year old knees and it uses different muscles. You need to break up your routine by doing different types of cardio. This can be different modes of cardio or by switching up your routines. Distance vs. Interval.

Anyway if you are going to exercise, you might as well do it for at least 30 minutes unless you are pressed for time. I mean the goal is to improve your conditioning so you should be looking at increasing endurance and times as you become more fit. Weight loss will come as you exercise. The more you lose the easier it is to do more which helps the process.

And it isn't it appropriate that the Battle of the Bulge should be mentioned in a thread all about battling the bulge?!

It will work if you put in the work. A better option would be to join a running group/ club. Surround yourself with like minded people who will support and encourage you.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work well for me because of my crazy hours. I'm in school full time plus I work. So far, the one I'm using is pretty motivating. It's also a social network, so I find I'm getting off my ass cuz I don't want anyone to see how lazy I am!

    Hey, whatever works!

Tsssk - how can you POSSIBLY be "lazy" if you're at college full-time and you work! Stop giving yourself such a hard time, girl!
