Default We're all #1... Trophy Generation

South Medford High School is graduating 21 valedictorians next weekend.

When the seniors say farewell to South Medford High in Oregon next weekend, one of the school's 21 valedictorians will lead the flag salute, another valedictorian will recite the history of the 365-member class, and a third will introduce the keynote speaker. But all 21 can enjoy a sweet piece of the ceremony, if they choose.

    Pathetic.

Was just talking about this with people the other night about the issue of every kid getting a trophy, or score not being kept for games, etc. It's fucking pathetic. The total pussification of this country makes me ill.

giving all the 6 year olds in t-ball a trophy = good idea.

giving all the 18 year olds a trophy = bad idea.

If anything this just reinforces the feeling of worthlessness some kids contend with when a large group "succeeds" like this, rather than just one supposed "over achiever" or "genius".

These terms are all socially constructed and inflated, but I agree with DD and to expand on it I think it encourages class stratification and singles out kids far too much. We're going to have more douchebag kids with no work ethic and a false sense of entitlement, more kids hating themselves, and ultimately our families and workforce will suffer in equal measure.

Competition, in life as in business and sports, is healthy.

Thought of this when I saw a little girl last week looking about 10 or so wearing a shirt with a message in Spanish that basically translated to "I am perfect".

Now I believe in positive reinforcement for a child (and my toddler has a couple of onesies that say "This is what AWESOME looks like" among other things) but there comes an age when a child needs to NOT believe that they are faultless and need to, in fact, prove that they can make a difference.

And abolishing scorekeeping ain't the way to do it.

You mean, my twelve year old son shouldn't have gotten a trophy for his hockey season yesterday after last place and a one win season?

    BLASPHEMY!!! HE'S SPECIAL DAMMIT!!!

In his defense, he was so upset over losing their last game in OT 7-6 after being up 6-4 with two minutes left (we are near DC, so they hold a lead as well as the Caps do), that I thought he going to throw the trophy into the trash on the way out.

Now I am sure it is due to my comments over the years partially, but he has gotten to the point that he thinks it is pretty stupid as well. My eight year old was thrilled with a trophy.

Now, our schools actually only hand out two best student awards per grade, one for a boy and one for a girl, that I think is a good award, but the rest? Best storytime listener, best friend, best smile, best nosepicker, best ass wiper, just so everyone gets an award? To me that is fucking insane.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Exactly, my son (when he was 4) had a t-shirt that read Captain Awesome On a 4 year old, that's cute. At some point as you get older you move into douchebag if you're wearing that shirt. We seem to be having difficulty setting the douchebag line but it's certainly long before high school grad.

Same goes for participation trophies. I coach t-ball (4 and 5 year olds) - it's nice that they all get trophies and we don't keep score. But you can't keep to those rules as they get older. At some point they stop being cute little kids who don't understand that if someone wins then someone else has to lose.

I'm sorry but I am old school and don't believe in scoreless games, fake trophies or multiple awards so one doesn't get offended Once a kid becomes an adult and gets a job, all of that disappears. The game of life is played with winners and losers. Sadly we are becoming more acceptance that losing is not only an option but one that people should wear proudly.

My good friend keeps score for his daughters scoreless soccer games. He tells her at the end who actually won and who actually loss. If they win, she gets ice cream. If not, she goes home.

I wish they would at least offer an option if your kid wants to participate in a more traditional program.

I don't recall my lad having any shirts / tops saying how amazing he is / was. Most of his said something along the lines of "Little Horror" (or worse, far, far worse...) I believe in starting kids at the lowest possible point on the self-esteem scale and building them up from there...VERY slowly - and only when absolutely warranted!

    6. Let me rephrase that he doesn't make her feel bad if her team loses but rewards her for when they win. Believe me he is a very loving parent and provides a great environment for his children. He does incorporate newer ideas with parenting however he doesn't subscribe to the idea that everybody wins.

Now you're going to be cheating students from other schools, where everyone isn't a valedictorian, in the college admissions process.

And they're cheating in the third-party scholarship process. Which looks more impressive to a decision-maker, valedictorian or salutatorian?

I didn't read the article, but I'm assuming they had an equal number of salutatorians?
