Default China's Plans to Bring Home the Bacon...

Just wondering what you guys make of this, given that you all seem to be mad, crazy, bacon-lovers - and that China seems to be perpetually hitting the headlines over food scares...

(Not to mention that fact that quite a number of posters have expressed concerns about America losing business to Chinese corporations...)

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22712637

    30 May 2013

China's Shuanghui International plans to buy US pork producer Smithfield Foods for $4.7bn (3.1bn) to meet the country's rising demand for meat.

Shuanghui, which is China's biggest pork producer, is offering to pay for the company in cash.

The deal, if approved, will be the largest takeover of a US company by a Chinese rival.

In recent years there has been an increased appetite among Chinese firms for acquisitions abroad.

In the US, however, regulators have blocked a number of potential purchases on national security concerns.

Smithfield, which owns the Armour and Healthy Ones brands, said the deal would allow the firm to expand the sale of of its brands abroad.

However, the takeover bid is likely to be closely scrutinised in the US by regulators due to a regular series of Chinese food scandals, including the sale of tainted meat.

In 2011, China's state broadcaster CCTV revealed that Hong Kong-based Shuanghui's pork products contained the banned chemical clenbuterol, which makes the meat leaner.

One of the most infamous foods scandals was in 2008, when six infants died and about 300,000 fell ill from tainted milk powder. It was later found to have contained melamine, an industrial chemical.

As a result, there is increasing demand among Chinese consumers for foreign food brands, which are viewed as a safer alternative to local products.

We've let the Chinese control much of what we use on a daily basis, why not give them control of our food supply as well.

Let's try and make it so everything is controlled by a foreign pseudo-government corporation. There is no way this should be allowed to happen with the horrible food safety record of the Chinese.

But we are stupid, and someone will have their pocket lined with cash to say yes.

Sorry, maybe just getting cynical in my old age, but I am sure that unless someone makes a big stink about it, the sale will be allowed.

Are Communists even enemies anymore to us?

When did we lose our souls to economic harlotry?

We used to have scruples but the United States is planted firmly on her knees at the cock of China never wanting to get up or willing. Do we as a society NEED cheap Chinese products to survive? I can somewhat understand American businesses going overseas because it's cheaper to do business in those countries but our politicians let the Chinese come over and BUY their way and get a foothold to where they would never even have to worry about starting a war or be afraid of a war with us because they OWN US! Figuratively and literally. I'm afraid America is a nation in decline. Nobody respects us anymore because we don't respect ourselves anymore. At least the people who represent us don't. Very sad.

American corporations have been buying foreign companies for generations. It would be virtually impossible (and pretty stupid) for your country to then outlaw foreign companies (like Chinese ones) from investing in American companies.

    America buys Chinese companies?

Why would it be stupid to not allow a major human rights violator to purchase American companies. I mean we give lip service to speaking about the dignity of man and for people to be free. How does allowing a country like China to buy America achieve that aim?

But it's ok for american companies to set up shop in a nation of "human rights violators" for their cheap labour so your stuff will be cheaper at walmart?

No its not ok to me. Its a shame and although I understand why American companies do it it still doesnt make it right Capitalism or not. My point still stands. The American government doesnt even pretend to have any morals anymore. We're afraid of the Chinese and my life would keep on going if there weren't any cheap Walmart stuff.

When did the american govt have morals? Its not like american companies set up shop in china last tuesday. Not that they could, or should, control where american companies are allowed to invest. I'm just not sure what you want the govt to do. U want them to ban all relationships with china? Outside of that then they'd look like hypocrites for having a problem with china investing in america.

I'm a protectionist Mike. I'm not a fan of free trade, especially with Communist countries. Believe it or not my country used to have "morals" in that it wouldn't have dreamt of trading or investing with a country like China pre Nixon. And China is not just "investing" in America. They're taking over by buying companies/land etc. It's fairly obvious to anybody with eyes. We bend over backward to not offend them and it's sickening to me. I want my country to practice what it preaches in regards to all people being free. There are plenty of friendly countries out there that we can step up and do more trade with than China like Taiwan but we don't want to hurt the feelings of our good friends the Chinese government by doing THAT! The world will not stop turning if we all of a sudden told the Chinese to take a hike. and I wish we would.

I get the anti free trade thing. Perfectly fair.

But you lose me when you go on the "not trying of offend them" stuff. America is a free market. Your companies buy foreign companies and you allow them to buy yours. You can't very well get offended when china buys a US company when hundreds of US companies own chinese factories.

For the record I agree with you that allowing a chinese company to buy major companies here is not the best idea but then we need to just stop trading with them completely.

I'm also curious as to whether an American FOOD company will continue to profit, if and when it is taken over by a Chinese corporation...Assuming that Americans are aware of all the food scandals that have come to light in China in recent years, I wonder if they will allow this to affect their decision to purchase goods from this company, or not? Will the (presumably) low cost of the foodstuffs on offer outweigh any residual health and safety concerns? I'm intrigued!
