Default Van Halen US Festival TV special UPGRADE (5/29/13)

VHND has a brand new YouTube channel, the Van Halen Vault. Today we uploaded our first video to the channel. It's an upgrade from the US Festival. It's "Runnin' With The Devil" which was part of the Showtime TV segment. It's clearer than what was out there previously. Enjoy!

30th Anniversary of the 1983 US Festival: HIGHEST QUALITY Footage Unearthed!

Thursday & Friday we'll debut the two remaining upgraded-quality videos.

(Brett, is it possible that you can change a setting so that youtube videos get embedded on VHLinks at a larger size than they do currently?)

I see there's already a thread for the anniversary of the US Festival, but I though these upgraded videos warranted their own thread. Merge this into that one if you'd like.

Thanks Jeff, any improvement is welcome!

Unfortunately, (and this is certainly not your fault) the Showtime edit is pretty frustrating. It's edited more like a montage than an actual performance with the slow motion and heck, the brief footage of Michael Anthony at :33 is the same footage as at 2:27, and the vocals and background vocals were certainly not the only things fixed, it's patched up in several places. Check out Eddie tapping out harmonics with his hand completely behind his back at 2:15 for example.

    Sorry for the bitching, man.

I really love all this old footage and I've cherished my VH bootleg from the show for a long time but I think I'm just more frustrated with the US Festival footage than ever before since other bands have been releasing their full performances on official DVDs and the sound quality for all of them is astounding. I've got the Quiet Riot, Triumph, and Judas Priest shows and just imagining what having an old VH show in this quality would be like is so frustrating because I just don't ever see it happening.

    Check out these for example:

Judas Priest, Riding on the Wind.

    Triumph, Fight the Good Fight.

And those clips don't remotely compare to the actual quality on DVD.

Man, I hear you!! But I don't see it happening, either. The full US Festival is just one of many things they could release.

Off topic, but man, just watched that video of the Priest Snowdog added the Link to... God, I'd forgotten what an incredible singer Halford was... And that's live... Unreal.

No doubt. I'm a huge Judas Priest fan and even though Rob is in his 60s now and most of his range is gone he manages to sing much lower but still do it in a way that sounds good to me. But from the late 70s to the late 80s or so his vocals were just indescribably insane. And he made it seem almost effortless. Check out Rik Emmett in the other clip between about 4:25 and 4:40 though. Pretty damn amazing as well.

Outstanding. That was a great video.

I live about 45 minutes from Devore and drive by Glen Helen Regional Park all the time. I wish VH would play there again.

The US Festival will never be released because the band (including Ed) makes too many mistakes. It would not do VH's legacy any good for this to see the light of day. Being fans doesn't mean we shouldn't call it like it is. RWTD is not a hard song to play, I'm surprised they couldn't play it correctly. I'm sure some banned substances were involved.

Yeah, after double checking that you're right. Again though, that only emphasizes how removed the Showtime edit is from the actual performance. You're not really watching them play, you're just watching a montage that sometimes is and sometimes isn't in sync with the actual music.

Agreed. I'd love to see the whole performance warts and all. I do realize the are having as much fun as the fans and are not in Dave Grohl's garage trying to "nail" it

OK, it's not really a big deal, but being reminded yesterday was the 30th Anniversary of the US Fest, I dubbed another song off my own audio recording I did at the US Festival of VH's set onto the usual live video bootleg. Here's audio of "Dancing In The Street" complete with me and my buddies, fried from 2 days in the smoggy sun (at that point), loaded yelling over the band dubbed onto the usual video bootleg:
