Very interesting. What Eddie said at 9:30 matched my perception of him at the time. He really wasn't that interested in being a flashy guitarist and "playing fast and crazy like I used to". "I don't think you'll last in the music business if I was still playing as fast as I could".

He may or may not have been right...but I know I missed the way he played in the early days. I don't see why there could not have been room for both. Ah well...C'est la vie.

Its kind of funny that Eddie mentioned being involved in porno as a joke.

The reason i liked VH in 1989 was because they had great songs.
Yes Eddie's solos rocked but it was about the songs to me.
Not the mindless solos that others were doing.

I really enjoyed listening to that! Both Eddie and Mike seemed really cheerful and happy to talk about most things. There should be more Mike interviews out there, I always find his perspective really interesting.

I was kinda missing the NOT mindless solos he was doing in the early days. (Along with great songs) I suppose I was assuming if Eddie had continued playing that way, it would be much better than what the others were doing.

Even in the early days, you had solos like ATBL which are not more difficult to play than a Kurt Cobain one. Or RWTD. They are not more technical than say WIL.
But when Ed wrote a fast song like "Source of Infection," then the playing was still very complex and daring. So I'm not really getting the whole thing that he quieted down during the Sam years. They went from 2 keyboard songs per album to 3 keyboard songs. I don't think it was the revolution some of you guys make it to be.

And if he did what he wanted, that's the best we could get from him
All the other VH-copycat bands sound like they were trying to emulate something they didn't have into them.

Van Halen never sounded like this, ever! Not even on III (althought most of people hate it).

This band has a lot of disturbing "what ifs" but the <what if Eddie didn't change his playing...> one is not one of them! Yet, people insist on bringingin this up!

Yep, I agree with everything you just wrote. There is a lot of ripping stuff during the Sammy years but even when a musician goes from putting stuff like Eruption on albums to stuff like 316 it's usually not because they forgot how to play or aren't as good as they used to be, the change is usually because of the confidence one gains after playing and recording for a long time. Eddie, like many others who stuck around for lengthy careers, simply realized that he cared more about making the music that he thought sounded good than he did about trying to show off, or impressing people.

I guess the people who just view music as some sort of carnival freakshow where it's all about "look what I can do!" think that's boring. I just think it's evolving.

It's the difference between a movie with a great script and acting and cinematography and dialog on one hand and another that's just a series of car crashes and explosions and fart jokes. Some people just want the latter and will always think it's better even when it's juvenile.

Don't know if you've heard this or not but it's a great 8 part interview with Mike.

Best part was hearing just Mike and Ed together speaking as bandmates, and just having fun talking about the present ('89) and the past. I still love hearing EVH interviews because he's really well-spoken and interesting, and when Mike can get a word or several in, all the better...
