Default “ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease”

The German weekly Der Spiegel quoted in its cover story on 2 February 2012 the US American psychiatrist Leon Eisenberg, born in 1922 as the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, who was the “scientific father of ADHD” and who said at the age of 87, seven months before his death in his last interview: “ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease”

I am sure it is a real disorder, but I was watching the news this weekend and they were saying that one in four American children has a mental illness, and that is what I like to call bullshit.

In many cases I think parents are looking for an convenient excuse for their bad parenting, or are wanting a magic cure all pill that will remove the necessity to parent their child.

Many of the children that I know of that are diagnosed with ADHD have shitty parents, small sample size of course, but I think a lot of childrens "mental issues" would be cured with heavy and equal doses of love and discipline.

ADHD may be real, but I think it's safe to say that at the very least it is extremely overdiagnosed.

My childhood doctor told my parents I had ADHD when I was 10.

That diagnosis lasted until I got my first bad grades. Dad then explained in detail what the household cure was for ADHD

I never believed that all these new found cases of ADD, ADHD, Autism, etc were real. I mean if they are then the same could be said for every previous generation(s) and some how people were able to manage without drugs, counseling, etc

The fact is that treating kids with disorders is a multi-billion dollar industry. If a board creates a disease or says it is more widespread, it will generate more interest in their business.

Of course there are kids out there with mental issues. I don't discount but I just have a hard time believing the numbers that are being thrown out there.

As I've mentioned before, my wife is a 1st grade teacher. She has kids in her class that are already on medication for ADHD.

Have you ever seen a 6 or 7 year old that liked sitting in their desk and learning math problems? From my limited exposure to kids that are diagnosed that early, my anecdotal conclusion is that these kids seem to have a common factor of parents that are overconcerned with everything their kid is doing, and they often subscribe to new age disciplinary techniques.

I had teachers try to tell me my son was ADHD. No, he's extremely intelligent and he was bored in class! I wonder how many other gifted intelligent children have been dumbed down by drugs?

I remember one of the most used punishments in elementary school was "to put your heads down." You would sit there with your head laying on folded arms like one was trying to take a nap. Of course this punishment wasn't effective as you got older and actually wanted to take a nap. However to grade school kids who are restless, it was used as punishment.

Guess all of us in the 70's had ADD.

My guess is that this sort of stuff was underdiagnosed for years and is now overdiagnosed (not that I'm an expert here). But its a real issue for some kids and sadly (much like allergies) the issue gets overlooked since so many people most cases are bs.

As for the 1/4 number - they seem to want to go so many people in the mental illness/ disabled cat that everyone can slide in one or another.

A good friend asked me a while back where ADD/ADHD & all of these other diagnoses were when we were kids. I reminded him in so many words that what wasn't played, biked, run, fished or hunted out of us was parented out.

I knew one kid that was on ritalin when I was a child. Probably half of my kids' friends are on some form of medication to help them "focus" in school. I've looked at some of their school assignments & no wonder they need focus, the drudgery they're being taught as learning is pitiful, but don't get me started on that.

I know people who have ADHD; it's real - and it's obvious who REALLY have it.

Some parents think their kids have ADHD, as they feed them a fuck ton of sugar, then don't let them run around outside and burn off any energy - and don't understand why the kids won't sit still... That folks ain't ADHD.

My son's first grade teacher called a meeting with me and my wife several years ago. She had diagnosed my son with ADD and prescribed grape seed extract. She was part of a pyramid scheme selling the shit.
