You know, I can't think of anyone! There are some great guitarists out there, but they're not on the level he's at. Jerry Cantrall and the guy from Soundgarden (I forget his name) come to mind and I like the guy in Creed too, but they're not taking anything to the next step and most of them don't stand out like Ed. I think part of that comes from the fact that the newer bands don't work in a great sounding guitar solo anymore for whatever reason - maybe it's because they don't have anything.

The only guitarist before Edward that I could just sit and listen to play was Jimmy Page and since Edward, there's been nobody else that can capture that magic.
    Could this be magic?

The only post Eddie guitar player that I feel can even hold a candle to him, is Joe Satriani. Though instrumental, he writes some excellent songs. Do I thin khe is better than Ed?, Technically...yes, but not by much, overall...no.
Ed just has that something special, I mean there are some VH songs I don't like, but none of them suck. He is without a doubt the greatest there ever will be.

    did satriani popularise tapping.. NO
    or harmonics or etc etc

satch is v good for a rip-off artist , but no way is he better than evh..

evh INVENTED it , satch just worked on it..

maybe holdsworth is better technically.. so what ! its not all technique - soul & heart are what REAL rock n roll are ALL about and ED's got that in spades..

joe is too clinical , half his stuff reminds me of , well , reminds me of ED...'nuff said..!

    VAI!!!

i don't think he's better than Eddie... but his stile is unique IMO, just like Eddie...

if you listen Eddie... you know it...
if you lisyen VAI... you know it...

besides the fact that he's the most creative musician/artist/guitar player around... (until Eddie is back...)
=\//-/= LIVE: once again, i'll make it!!!

No one has come out that is as original and groundbreaking as Eddie is/was. But if you think back there are very few that have revolutionized guitar as much as Eddie. Before him, I would have to say Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and maybe Scotty Moore.

There are still a buttload of guitarists out there that are doing great things. I think Nuno form Extreme is an amazing guitar player. Very few guitar players have the ability to shred like him but have the maturity to play what the song requires whether that is one note per bar or 110.

Kirk Hammett, Tom Morello, Munky and Head from Korn, Ty Tabor from King's X, Billy Corgan, etc... have all added different cool things to guitar. But they have not made people re-think guitar as much as Eddie has.

I have no doubt someone will eventually come along and revoulutionalize guitar again. It's just a matter of time. It's just very rare.

I would nominate one man because he has done what Ed did, take all his influences in, use them, but not sound identical to them. That is Eric Johnson. He seldom plays the ferocious rock Ed does, but he is a very fluid, clean player. He is very meticulous about his chording and fingering to get great tone. Although he is a technical monster, he is a great songwriter as well. Check out his albums Tones, Ah Via Musicom or his newest release, Alien Love Child.

Although there are hundreds of great technical guitar players out there, none of them have the soul and songwriting chops Ed has. Satch has written some great songs, but isnít as consistent as Ed in that department. I donít find Vai very musical, but technically his is unreal.

We can list dozens of names of guys that are probably technically better than Ed, but none of them have the soul and feel that Ed does. Thatís why the entire VH catalog will always be around and passed down for a new generation to discover.

    Of course Ed!

I also think George Lynch is a highly underrated guitarist. He plays some very tasty stuff... I mean way beyond the Dokken stuff. Check out some of the tracks from his collaberation with Jeff Pilson.
