Default Van Halen To Play California’s Mid-State Fair!

You can add a second U.S. show to Van Halen’s slowly growing 2013 touring schedule. The California Mid-State Fair has booked the band for one night in July with tickets going on sale next week.

The Chumash Grandstand Arena in Paso Robles is the place you’ll want to be July 24. Tickets ranging in price from $50 to $180 go on sale May 17 at 10 a.m. PDT.

At this time the only other upcoming U.S. Van Halen gig known to man is the band’s July 20 appearance at “Rock USA” in Oshkosh, Wis. The band played Australia’s inaugural Stone Music Festival April 20.

Van Halen spent the first half of 2012 touring and then nixed the year’s remaining North America dates. At that time David Lee Roth cut a video announcing the bad news, saying the band had “bit off more than we could chew.”

Later in the year Van Halen postponed a November run through Japan, eventually rescheduling the shows for June 2013.

In August the band announced that Eddie Van Halen had undergone surgery for a “severe bout of diverticulitis.” For those of you who didn’t make it to med school, WebMD describes the affliction as a “sometimes painful condition that develops when pouches (diverticula) that form in the wall of the colon, part of the large intestine, become inflamed or infected.”

Here’s the VH schedule as it stands today:

    June 18 – Nagoya, Japan, Aichi-ken Gymnasium
June 21 – Tokyo, Japan, Tokyo Dome
June 24 – Osaka, Japan, City Central Gymnasium
June 26 – Osaka, Japan, City Central Gymnasium
July 20 – Oshkosh, Wis., Ford Festival Park (Rock USA)
July 24 – Paso Robles, Calif., Grandstand @ California Mid-State Fair

For more information about Van Halen’s July 24 concert, please click here for the California Mid-State Fair website.

Btw… If you run into Alex Van Halen, go ahead and wish him a “Happy Birthday!” As of today (May 8), the drummer is 60 years young.

Well! I guess it was just a matter of time with Dave back that they would be relegated to the state fair circuit.

Seriously though, is this like a REALLY BIG state fair?

Looks like they're still trying to fill the bill.

EDIT: Sorry, never mind. There is another thread already started in the tour forum.

It would be cool if they can also get added to the California State Fair in Sacramento.

Playing state fairs is less-ideal, but you're not responsible for lugging around a PA system, large crew or lightshow in those scenarios. I these situations bands like this might actually profit more with less overhead.

Wow. Livestock shows, Ag exhibits, tractor races, the "diaper derby", and Van Halen.

    Weird.

This is a big venue, as far as fairs are concerned. At full capacity for a concert, it is just under $10K people (I made friends with the former promoter of the Mid-State Fair). It's quite lucrative, too, because the overhead is very, very low (outdoor gig).

Yeah, it's a fair, but so what? The show they did there with Gary back in 1998 was fantastic. It was also sold out.

Who gives a shit if it's a state fair, it's a live VH gig, great news. I'm sure the band is being paid well. I'd love to see them in a 9000 seat arena, that would be amazing. In fact, it might be time for them to change they way they tour and the way they put on a show. Smaller venues, like 5-10 thousand, and maybe something like two one hour sets with an intermission in between. Play like 5-8 shows a month then take a break. Fuckin Al is 60 and Dave/Ed aren't far behind. I don't think they can handle a touring schedule that a young rock band would do. Ed's health has been an issue the last 5 years and Dave looks like he can't keep up at times.

You think if they add a couple more summer shows, that people will stop bitching about their end of the world, life crushing experience? You know, when the band pulled the rug out from under them, destroying their lives, after cancelling all those shows last year? Nah, I didn't think so either.

That show kicked ass. The meet-n-greet was pretty fucking cool, too.
