I hear ya, DD. I wish it was better quality too. But you know, I often see people say, "I wish they would clean [this or that footage] up." Whenever I read that, I wonder if people place way too much hopes in that. If you had an audio expert do what they could with the sound from this video, you would hear VERY little difference, if any. You can't take a distorted audio and improve it much. And no one can take a blurry video and make it clear. You can only make small improvements. I'm just saying that "cleaning up" any given live recording won't work wonders.

If the band ever ends up releasing an old recording that's truly great quality, it will be because the recording was inherently great quality to begin with. It won't be great because it was "cleaned up" much.

Yeah, seriously, that's a killer performance of that song.

I've said it before but what's one more time......if you could drop me back at any tour from any VH era it's the Fair Warning tour. It's always been the ultimate VH tour for me.

If I could time travel back to any tour... here's my top 3 picks:

    1) 1981 tour
    2) 1979 tour
    3) 1983 South American tour

I never saw any of those tours, but they're my faves based on all the bootlegs that are out there. All three of those tours were just ridiculously epic.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Jeff. What's the old idiom of polishing excrement?

And, thus... that's why I believe we'll never get any official release from the early days that is of any quality. I truly don't believe anything of "quality" exists. It's a sin that the 1981 Fair Warning (save from those few Oakland songs that is the holy triumvirate for =VH= fans) or the 1984 Tour was not officially filmed in 35mm. I just don't think these guys were thinking of capturing the moment for future posterity.

Heck, there is supposedly live stuff of quality from the Sammy era (Japan 1989 and Pensacola/Italy/Toronto 1995) that will never see an official release either, for that matter.

Yeah, you said that I couldn't have said it better myself, but then you summed it up beautifully by saying, "You can't polish a turd." Very true.

Even if they finally release the three songs from Oakland '81, it would probably be roughly the same quality we saw on MTV back in 1981!

That said, they should release it anyway!

As for quality, they are limited to the technology they recorded things on, and whatever they recorded would of course have been analog and would have degraded each and every year until they finally decided to preserving the quality by digitizing it. And god knows when they got around to digitizing it. I doubt that there's much footage that's very clear. Of course, very little could be true DVD quality, and completely forget about Blu-ray quality.

My favorite saying about collecting bootlegs... "Beggars can't be choosers."

Nowadays, you have 50% of teenagers walking around with iPhones that have HD recording capabilities, but ironically, nothing out there that's very interesting that's worth recording.

But think of late '70's, early '80's Van Halen shows, where you have a band that is in their youthful prime that's revolutionizing rock 'n roll and putting on unforgettable, history-in-the making concerts, yet there's almost nothing decent around for fans to record them on! Heck, there are entire tours in which there are NO decent audience recordings of.

And the band? They hardly ever splurged to document themselves properly. I guess when you lived it every day, it would be hard to realize how special and magical it was for other people.

Not sure if the Van Halen encyclopedia is 100% accurate, but in the tourdate section it states that some shows were filmed by Warner Brothers, most from the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland.

7-28-81 @ Capital Centre, Largo, MD.

    7-16-82 @ Greensboro Colusiem , NC

10-11-82 @ Capital Centre, Largo, MD.
10-12-82 @ Capital Centre, Largo, MD.

3-26-84 @ Capital Centre, Largo, MD.

They also state a few others were filmed, but do not specify by whom.

9-22-78 @ Selland Arena, Fresno, CA.

5-14-79 @ Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA.

9-20-80 @ Sports Arena, Los Angeles, CA.

    8-18-84 @ Donnington Festival, UK. ( European MTV )

I refuse to believe that VH or Warner Brothers did not film some shows. It just doesn't make sense not to chronicle their history in film. I speculate most likely the footage may not be usable for whatever reason. Bad camera angles, lighting issues, or other technical deficiancies. Who knows. Some may be one camera tripod angles similar to some of the stuff seen on the Kissology dvd's. I know Kiss is a bad example, but they took a long time before releasing old footage as well.

Other footage already in bootleg circulation may be hard to obtain the master tapes, if they were owned by South American tv stations they may be lost or no longer even exist. Most certainly the US Festival should be available, since other acts that played there have put out their performances officially.

It took EVH 22 years to change his mind about getting back with DLR, so maybe in the future he will finally release some old live stuff. I won't hold my breath.

So many comments on the internet about the '81 Oakland footage being the holy grail, but the '79 stuff is also equally intriguing to hope for more. Which is why I went to the VH Encyclopedia tonight, to find out where it was filmed.

Even if and when VH release a live dvd, everyone will immediatly want more. So ideally , if they could just put everything into a nice long package all at once , regardless of quality , similar to what Kiss did with Kissology, that would almost make it worth the wait.

This fuckin band has shitloads of tape, good quality stuff too, probably from very early on. I'd bet my last dollar on it. Wolfgang needs to make this a pet project of his when he's looking for something to do. The other guys probably have no clue what to do with it and couldn't be bothered.

This is an absolutely stellar performance of SS. You can hear it even through the poor quality audio.

well, since I'm from Holland I would say any tour will do. We haven't been very lucky with this band and their touring schedule past, present & future.
But this 1981 stuff is fantastic

That song could be done today with the way Dave now sings. Sure Mike's harmonies would be missed but I think Wolfie does an admirable job singing background.
