Default Fatal Shootout In Middlefield, Ohio

Suspect killed after shooting two Middlefield police officers identified

    March 11, 2013

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio - A man who was killed after shooting at Middlefield police officers during a traffic stop has been identified.

James L. Gilkerson, 42, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, was the suspect, the Geauga County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said Gilkerson shot at the two officers from his vehicle before the officers had a chance to exit the cruiser on Route 608 (North State Avenue) and Tare Creek.

The officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.

"I heard a bang, bang, a bang," said Christopher Coggins, who didn't realize what he heard were gunshots. "At worst, I thought it was firecrackers because it is a small town and nothing ever happens here."

A female officer was shot in the hand and taken to a nearby hospital by medical helicopter to undergo emergency surgery.

The male officer sustained minor injuries to his left knee from flying fragments.

Police have not officially released the names of the officers, but a sign outside the Middlefield Municipal Center read "Heartfelt blessings to officers Savage and Thomas."

Both officers are expected to fully recover.

Officials said the suspect was using a semi-automatic rifle.

It is unknown how many shots were fired.

Police release video of fatal shootout with Ohio ‘terrorist’

    May 4, 2013

Police in Middlefield, Ohio released the findings on Friday of an investigation of the man incited a street shootout with two officers before being shot dead himself.

“He got out of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers,” said police chief Arnold Stanko of 42-year-old James Gilkerson. “We don’t know why he did it.”

According to The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Gilkerson fired on officers Erin Thomas and Brandon Savage after being pulled over on a routine traffic stop on March 10. Footage from the officers’ dashboard camera shows Gilkerson yelling “Kill me, kill me” after being hit, but continuing to fire before being shot and killed.

“He was a scumbag, and a terrorist, and he’s dead,” Stanko said.

Thomas required surgery after being shot in the left hand and left thigh. Savage sustained minor injuries to his left knee.

WKYC-TV reported on Friday that, while investigating Gilkerson’s background, authorities found several other firearms, as well as almost 400 bullets and a collection of knives hidden in his mother’s car. They also found several books at his home related to, among other subjects, procuring new identification, building weapons at home and how to dispose of a dead body.

“When you see what he had, how much ammunition he had, and how he reacted to being pulled over by the police,” said Geauga County prosecutor Jim Flaiz. “Certainly I think you can speculate that these officers might have prevented a tragedy down the road.”

Middlefield shooting: The secret life of James Gilkerson

MENTOR-ON-THE-LAKE -- While there's no way to change what happened March 10, police say the disturbing details surrounding the man who shot at Middlefield police have led them to a new investigation.

James Gilkerson was, by all appearances, a nice man who devoted his time to caring for his elderly mother in Mentor-on-the-Lake.

But police, now calling him a terrorist, say even she didn't know things about her 42-year-old son.

"There's no really criminal history to this guy. He didn't work. He was a loner," said Middlefield Police Chief Arnold Stanko.

But it seems doting son was just a mask for a man planning another identity.

Gilkerson was shot and killed after he opened fire on police officers and he might have been planning an attack much bigger.

"Now phase two of the investigation is going to be: who was this guy? What was he doing?" said Jim Flaiz, the Geauga County prosecutor.

Middlefield police officers found an arsenal in a duffle bag on the passenger seat of his mother's green Saturn sedan -- knives, guns, nearly 400 bullets and the gunpowder to make more, or build explosives.

"He also had a black ski mask, black leather gloves. He had a number of books and pamphlets in his trunk, instructional videos on gun fighting and some other things," said Flaiz.

The makeshift library of books and videos read like a sickening instruction manual: advanced rifle techniques, the big book of homemade weapons, "Be your own undertaker" and "Acquiring new ID."

While James Gilkerson can't tell us what he was planning, police are determined to find answers.

"When you see what he had, how much ammunition he had, and how he reacted to being pulled over by the police," said Flaiz. "Certainly I think you can speculate that these officers might have prevented a tragedy down the road."

Did anyone else know what Gilkerson was up to?

That's still part of the investigation. Prosecutors have interviewed his mother, Dorothy Gilkerson, who's since been forced to move in with another relative for care.

They say she's tried to be helpful but she's distraught and has no answers for his behavior.
