    Default Pickup Wiring Questions

Alright gents...I've probably started 3 threads over the course of the last 4 years regarding this subject but my lazy ass has finally decided to put together my Franky.

My problem is with wiring this fuckin humbucker. The diagrams Ive read online are simple but they always show to wires coming out of the pick up. I only see one wire coming out of this one. DISCLAIMER: Im a dumbass, so please be patient with my lack of knowledge regarding this subject.

If anybody could help me out here, I'd really appreciate it!

Oh and here's a pic of the Franky if anybody's interested....

There's not 2 (or 4 depending on the PU) individualy insulated conductors (wires) running inside that braided shielding?

Go here and look at the single-conductor pickup box. That should help!

    Thanks!

My problem is I don't have that many freakin wires coming out of my PU. There are no colours or individual insulated wires.

You have a single conductor PU. One hot (inside the insulation) and one ground (the braided cable).

The shielded braid is the same as the green and bare wires you are seeing in the diagram. The center or hot wire is the same as the black wire in the diagram.

The red and white wires in the diagram are for coil tapping.

    Excellent!

So my next question is, once I solder the hot wire inside the insulation to the pot. What do I solder to the input jack? There has to be another wire to connect the two.

You'll have (2) wires to input jack. One, will come off of the middle leg of the Volume pot and go to the tip/hot of the jack.

The other will come off of the back of the volume pot and go to the ground on the jack.

If you don't have extra wire available, you'll have to purchase some.

Make sure you take the right leg of the volume pot (looking at pot from underside of pickguard) and solder it to the back of volume pot. Use some scrap wire if needed.

Here's a pic using a single volume pot:

    * The tremolo ground goes to the pot
    * The PU braided cable goes to the pot and the single conductor goes to the bottom lug
    * The single conductor from the jack goes to the middle lug and the jack ground goes to the first lug and on through to the pot. You can also use a seperate wire in the same lug to the pot if you don't want to run the wire through the lug.

Awesome!!! I'm gonna need to get extra wire Cause I have none to go from the jack to the pot.

I'm starting to get how to do this! Much appreciated guys. Thanks for all the insight and assistance. Hopefully in a weeks time she's ready to be played!

One more question....the tremolo ground is just a wire that is taken from the block to the pot correct?

It's run from the tremolo spring claw to the pot.

If you don't mind using the replica as a guide, here's a few reference pics including the tremolo claw wiring:

    Haha!
I got a kick out of this thread! Don't beat yourself up.....I used to get this very same question at times. DIY guys who've tried to do it without reading the instructions, or calling a shop first saying "It's two conductor...but I only see one!" Only problem was some people keep cutting the braid in hopes of finding that second connector !!! Like "Dammit! It's gotta be in there!!!" Haha! It's actually an easy mistake, and it's easy to assume that a mass produced product may have a fault in manufacture...... I actually kept sections of braid around just in case I had to graft some on for cosmetics. Otherwise if it's way to short or the braid is too tight to slide back on and tacksolder, you can always run another wire from the pot, and run back and solder to the existing braid.
