Default Diver Down - Cathedral & Dancin in the Streets

What is the effect Ed uses on theses two songs (the second guitar track on DITS)? I can't seem to nail these two songs.

Delay. He's playing against the slapback repeat to create the rhythm you hear. Not sure if the delay time is the same for both tunes though. Actually, on the album, you're hearing synth with delay. . .not guitar. Later, in some concerts he played that riff on guitar.

    That's not a guitar? Wow.

It's tough to duplicate what Eddie is doin on Catherdral. I'll keep tryin, thanks for the feedback.

Yeah. He was messing around with the Mini-Moog at that time. Eddie actually played around and wrote a lot of VH stuff on synth, then reworked it on guitar. Ted heard him noodling with it, and thought it would be perfect for Dancin' in the Streets.
Ed wasn't thrilled about it. It's an arppegiator (a kind of sequencing unit in the synth, and he also added delay to sweeten it up) driven riff. What gives it the guitar like growl, and variation in tone is the classic filter of the Moog. He swept the filter throughout the song giving it more intensity in some parts.
Here's a pic of one similar to what he used.

For Cathedral, like Japeman said, he's using delay, and the guitar he used on the song in studio was reported to be a Strat. Eddie said that the volume knob actually froze at the end of the song. True or not, who knows.

Regarding Cathedral, it is pretty simple: standard delay set at about 375 - 390 milliseconds. If you have a repeat setting, only set it to 1 repeat (which means the repeat note is the same volume as the original note). Essentially you want to time it so that it is slower than 3 per second.

Ultimately, to really get it to work, you need to get the timing right. Too slow and you're just doubling over the notes instead of gaining the slap back. Too fast and it trips over the top of it and sounds like a jumbled mess.

Yeah, Cathedral is actually really easy. It's all hammer ons with your left hand, while your right hand rolls your volume up and down. Very easy once you get the hang of it.

Yep! and keep in mind that even the master has screwed it up from time to time. Watch the US Festival, and you can see him fumble it. He actually looks real embarassed for a second, but he recovers it well. It's still one of my favorite Eddie solo pieces.
