Default Jimmy Barnes discussing how Eddie asked him to join VH in 85

Interview with Barnesy this week on radio in lead up to Stone festival. About the 2 minute mark he talks about being asked to join VH by EVH and Ted Templeman etc.

    http://www.2gb.com/audioplayer/8414

For those non-Aussies, Jimmy fronted Australia's biggest domestic band, Cold Chisel and then had an equally big solo career. He is like Australia's Bruce Springsteen I guess. He talks about joining BS on stage at Hanging Rock as well and there is audio. Great interview. If you haven't yet checked it out, listen to the re-recording of one of Jimmy's greatest solo songs, Too much ain't enough love with Joe Bonamassa on lead guitar and Aerosmith's Brad Whitford - brilliant stuff. Check out Cold Chisel for his best work, the band is brilliant and part of Australia's fabric.

One of the only INXS songs I can stomach is the one he did with them for the lost boys, that's a GREAT song and Jimmy sings his ass off on it.

Is there a single musician in the entire WORLD that EVH didn't ask to join Van Halen at some stage?

His story does not make sense he said ed went to meet him with Ted T. I thought Ed hated Ted in 85 and I cant believe Eddie told him they will be a ballad band, but it was funny after he said that the dj played one of his songs kinda like making a comparison and his song was as lame as any ballad

Eddie wanted Ted to produce 5150 but Ted was busy producing EEAS.

A couple of months ago I had the chance to meet Eric Martin (from Mr. Big) and asked him about the time Ed called him around 1985.

    The story goes like this:

Eddie went to a Late Night with Dave Letterman show and Dave Kutch who was also there, told Eddie you should listen to this kid and gave him a tape with some Eric Martin songs, later Eddie called him and left him a message.
When they got in contact, Eddie was a little hard and told him, and told him not to call him Eddie insted to call him EDWARD and that he really liked his voice but that the songs sucked.
That made Eric insecure and didn't accept Eddie's invitation to jam at 5150, besides he thought filling in for Dave was immposible.

The story goes better because a couple of days later he jumped into Sammy at the airport and told him he got a call from EVH, Sammy told him don't even bother "I already got the gig!" when actually they where going to meet for the first time.

Eric told me he really regrets not going.
"I could call it anything, but the only word I can think of is Brown. It's just a warm sound. Warm, big, majestic" - Eddie Van Halen on his Tone

"Van Halen is definitely a ladies band, and I´ve got the Polaroids to prove it". - David Lee Roth

WOLFGANG did the IMPOSSIBLE, he brought back VAN HALEN, DEAL WITH IT.

To me, the best singer that turned down the chance to be in Van Halen was SASS JORDAN.

this was just released in Decenber

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

Sass is an amazing hard rock singer.

    But...

She would not at all fit with the larger than life brand that is Van Halen.

It just wouldn't work. A one time little project would be cool, I'm sure the music would be interesting, but it wouldn't be "VH".

And that's why she turned it down. I actually had a short chat with Sass a few years ago. She would have loved to have done something with them, but not under the name Van Halen.

I remember her saying she was invited to jam at 5150 by Eddie. She was thinking it was friendly jam but Ed and Al were looking at her for VH. When she figured out what was happening she told them no.

When you look at who they were considering it was obvious they were looking for a banshee. Sass Jordan, Jimmy Barnes, and Patty Smyth are similiar.
