    Default Maryland Governor Taxes Rain

Maryland Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley has instituted a tax on citizens for the amount of rain that falls on their property.
The tax, officially known as a "storm water management fee," will be enforced in nine of the state's counties. The state legislature passed it in 2012 purportedly to "raise revenue to cleanup [sic] the Chesapeake Bay," according to MarylandReporter.com. http://marylandreporter.com/2012/04/...nine-counties/

Former 2012 GOP U.S. Senate candidate Dan Bongino bashes the tax in a Wednesday afternoon press release. The law "requires individuals, businesses, and even charitable organizations and houses of worship to pay a tax based on the amount of rain that falls on their property and the 'impervious surfaces' on their land," he says.

The tax, mandated by the EPA and enforced locally, will be calculated "through satellite surveillance of your property," the statement claims.

Bongino blasts "out of touch political aristocrats in Maryland will do anything to diminish your economic liberty and starve your wallet while padding theirs."

According to the conservative organization Change Maryland, the rain tax will cost Marylanders about $300 million annually.

Governor O'Malley famously tried increasing taxes to balance the state's budget with little success in 2007. The increase in the top marginal tax rate, known as a "millionaire's tax," cost Maryland $1.7 billion in lost tax revenue, according to Change Maryland. Between 2007 and 2010, the state population suffered a net loss of 31,000 people.

*It also excludes properties owned by state or local governments and volunteer fire departments from being subject to the fee

You all don't know how bad I want to leave this shit-hole of a state. They're taxing us for everything to get money so they can build their pet projects. Taxing rain, yeah... that's really gonna work. Wonder if the ICC toll road is making a profit - nope. They just passed a new transportation bill to raise money so they can repair roads and build new transit systems. Hey, I have an idea... how about the state government stop raiding the transportation fund and putting in IOU's to pay for other projects and balancie this bloated-democrat budget. I go to Fredericksburg, VA a couple of times a year and to VA Beach to visit my brother and I will be stopping in VA more to fill up on gas. I once was proud to call myself a Marylander, but now I am ashamed to do that...

Don't even get me started on the gun control legislation that just passed...

that is nuts. Kind of ironic, too, that Maryland's motto is "The Free State". For the 3 1/2 years I lived there, didn't find nothing "free" about it at all!

Glad we picked Virginia instead of Maryland. Sorry, but that place is wack!

To be fair, lots of places have a run off fee. But whoever does PR for Maryland ought to be fired.

Maryland also taxes you on flushing your toliet aka Flush Fee. There was an attempt this year in the state legislature to tax your pets by weight but that did not make it this time around. If you own property in Maryland and live out of state you have to pay an extra transfer tax when you sell it. They are also working on taxing out of state workers like myself, one day they will get that done too. In spite of these cheesball taxes/fees on everything there's a yearly revenue shortfall and all the state workers get pensions and cadilac health care.

Maryland gets more absurd every day and nobody does anything to stop it. There is a large percentage of the population that gets "free" stuff. The rest of the population is afraid to say anything, for fear of being labeled one of the number of terms used to ridicule and/or silence any opposition.
The local press offer no objective reporting and basically believes in the idea of big government being the provider and protector for everyone.
This nonsense keeps continuing as small business after small business fails. My parents (former small business owners) left Maryland 20 years ago. They had had enough. They are now in northern Arizona, where at least for now there is true freedom of thought.
