Default This day in 1986 - VH's first show w/ Sammy

Van Halen was so late delivering the 5150 tapes that the album was delayed and it’s release date pushed back. Two warm-up shows in Anchorage, AK, and a third in Hawaii were cancelled because the album was still being mixed by Eddie, Donn Landee, and Mick Jones in-between rehearsals. (They were later rescheduled for the end of the tour, but for unknown reasons were again cancelled).

Then finally, when the new album was completed and the tour ready to start, the Hagar/Van Halen union was about to face the ultimate test – the fans.

"There were basically three camps of fans – those who preferred Dave, those who preferred Sammy, and those who loved the band with either frontman"

Count me in camp #3, with a slight lean to Dave.

Son of a goddamn fucking bitch (can I cuss on this here radio?), you had to remind me of that.

I lived in Texarkana then (and I'm back now after living in Austin 20 years) and was about 2 months from graduating high school when I was invited to drive down the 70 miles to Shreveport for this very show. Friends of mine had a ticket reserved for me. But of all things I had to go to south Texas to visit family and everyone else I knew went to the show. I still remember vividly sitting at my desk with them showing me pictures they took at the show.

And holy crap I was just about to write "I'm almost positive I remember Eddie wearing deep purple" and I just went to the article and there's the purple. I can't believe I remembered that after all these years.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.

    Thanks Jeff!

"As far as the set list for the tour, Sammy told Ed, Al, and Michael that he didn’t want to play too much of the old stuff."

Unfortunately it stayed this way for the next ten years, and is one of the reasons that I think Sammy had problems with the Dave era fans. Some of them never would have accepted him no matter what he did, but I'm sure there are some who would have cut him some slack if he would have paid a little more respect to the previous VH catalog.

I remember one of the shows I went to either on the Balance or RHRN tour, I can't remember which, the band launched in to RWTD while Sammy was doing something behind the amps or backstage. When he came out on stage the band stopped and everyone around me was pissed off and yelling for them to do the song. I know I got fed up with hearing the same four Dave tunes over and over again.

Say what you want about VHIII and Gary, but at least on that tour they played stuff that hadn't been heard live in years like I'm The One, Feel You're Love Tonight, Romeo Delight, etc. Gary gets props for that and I think Sam would've been wise to do the same.

I saw this tour in Omaha, Neb. To this day, it is the greatest concert experience I've witnessed. That tour was magical.

Lol... about the purple suit. Love the caption.

"Never-seen shot of Eddie on stage in Shreveport, Louisiana, March 27, 1986"

    "Never seen shot?"

    Yeah, I can tell why.

I actually think Sam was wise to refrain from doing too many Dave era tunes. After OU812, they shouldn't have done any imo. Two different versions of the same band. Dave's tunes have Dave's mark all over them. No one, not even Sam can do them like Dave. Ok... maybe Ralph. Grew up on the classic lineup and stayed on once I found out that Sam was on board. Burning joints laced with hash at Jones Park in Cedar Rapids Iowa before the show!

I think the idea was that Dave was gone for good and VH wanted to build a distinct identity. They had to do Panama and Jump.

I think Sam could techically sing Dave songs, but he was worried that they wouldn't come off right. I think I'll Wait, with a few minor adjustments, is a quintessential Hagar song.

I always thought with Hagar's laid-back California persona "Beautiful Girls" would have been a killer Dave-era song they could have tackled and made their own too. "I got a drink in my hand, I got my toes in the sand, and... (with Sammy's trademark scream) ...WOOOOOOW! What a beautiful girl!" And then cue Ed and Mike: "Beautiful girl!!!"

Aaaah, sometimes what is lost can never be found.
