Default 5150 III 50 Wat vs. 5150 III combo

    Well,

I had a 5150 III combo on order from Brad at King guitar but the more I thought about it I decided to switch the order up and cancel the combo and go with the 50W head and 2X12 cab. I just guess I prefer the head and cab look a little better. I know the combo had the power scale thing going for it but I am sold on the 50W head and cab. Anyways should be coming in a couple weeks or so. I am pumped....

You will not be disappointed !!! I have the 5150III 50w and the 1x12 cab. I use the little cab more as a monitor. I actually push a 4x12 with the 5150 III 50w. It does a damn good job.
The 1x12 and 2x12 both have Celestion 70th Anniversary G12H speakers not the EVH branded speakers. So I replaced all the speakers in the 4x12 with the same Celestion speakers. Not a problem. They sound badass and really move air !!! One day, I will put Scumback speakers in all my cabs.
As far as the power scaling goes--I just don't see the point. It seems like a cool feature to attract the younger market. It also seems like an uneccessary feature that could go out and require service repair. But, I will dare to say, with the volume level at about 11 to 12 o'clock---you will have fully introduced current to the power tubes. Hell, I never really get the volume levels past 9 or 10 o'clock on either channel and it sounds just fine to me.
It'll probably take about 20 to 30 hours to break in your speakers so adjust the tone stack as needed to compensate as they loosen up.
There is a bit of fiz with the 50w and I do not believe power scaling would ever make that go away.
Let us know your over all opinion about the amp after you have jammed it awhile !!!
Brad King rocks--I got the EVH USA Grey Stealth from him !!!!

The versatility of having a head and a cab is what makes it better than a combo IMO. Being it "the same" amp, if you have the option of having them separate you are always more confortable to change your gear, rack rig, stereo stuff etc...

I am also using Scumback speakers on my cabs! I use 3 1x12 cabs, the center dry is a M75 (greenback replica) and the outside ones are M75LHDC, that are a little less bright so they are good for handling the effects IMO. I used to have 5150 speakers but I'm no longer using them, too muddy when combined with my gear...

But I am a 6505 / 5150 I all the way... Rock on with your 5150III bud! I've also tried it and it has a killer sound!

thanks bro.... I appreciate the feedback. Over last weekend I was just thinking about it and I guess other than the versatility improvements on having the head and cab I guess I just like the look of the head and cab better too than the look of the new combo. I am glad I made the switch too because the combos are almost ready to be released and I think I did it just in time. Not too mention Brad is a great guy and was more than happy to let me switch the order.
