Default Ed can't play outside of Van Halen

I know a lot of people like to bash Ed and say he can't play outside of the confines of the Van Halen motif. I beg to differ.

Check out this recording from 1978. I think Ed does a fantastic job of playing to the song here.

Never heard this before, but I thought it was cool... Not completely my thing, but I think Ed fits in well here.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I can't recall anyone 'round here saying EVH can't play outside Van Halen.

Oh, if you look hard enough you'll find it. It usually pops up in an Ed vs. Satch thread, about how Ed can't play in situations like G3 or something like that.

It's usually used as a way to argue that Satch is better than EVH by people of that persuasion.

He's done it before, with kenny chesney (and probably others) But ironicly at the time though i dont think he could of played within the confines of van halen.

i think the criticism is that he is not comfortable playing in jam type events with other guitar players. That's different than saying he can't play outside of VH.

There's a difference between having Ed in the studio for a song like this or "Beat It" and jamming live with Allan Holdsworth or G3.

I've seen it said a lot and I generally agree with it. However, in my case that's not necessarily a bad thing, Eddie just has a different sort of clock and non-traditional musical sensibilities. He generally has a hard time playing over other people's music, at least live. But to me it's always just been a testament to how unique he is.

there was a time when Ed probably could have walked out and played with anyone at just about any time (I think he did something like that in 1991 right before NAMM with Steve Morse maybe?) he was very confident in his abilities at that time. Now, I don't know. Maybe he could, maybe he couldn't. I don't think you can bring up the Chesney performance cause I think they did a couple of VH songs, as far as him walking out with someone and just jamming....he could probably do it but I bet he wouldn't like it (just my impression of how Ed reacts to things these days).

I think you're mistaken. Eddie can't play outside IN HIS BACKYARD.

People have a lot of time on their hands in they're going to spend it bashing EVH's playing ability throughout his career.

I think someone has it bassackwards... I seem to recall many occasions where EVH has said anyone around him can't play outside of Van Halen.

Just as long as he doesn't try to be in another band.... Remember "you can't be in two bands" the cardinal rule of anyone wanting to be a member of van Hal--oh wait wha?

I am one of those that thinks EVH can't play well in a live situation when other guitarists are present. He finally had a chance to play along with his supposed "dream" bassist in Billy Sheehan back in the nineties and it sucked. Lukather was there too. Some of you may know what I'm talking about. Same 'ole bag of tricks and he doesn't just jam and let whatever comes into his head at that particular moment translate. That's where his peers blow his doors off imo.
