You Said A Mouth Full (of lyrics)

Did you ever have one of those songs that is so loaded with lyrics that, once you're able to get through it from start to finish without flubbing a line, you feel a certain amount of pride at doing so?

The songs that you start over endlessly at any point because you miss a word or start the verse at the wrong time.

The songs that torment you until you get it right.

Here's two of my favorites that took forever to master, and still catch me off guard to this day.

    Dire Straits - Industrial Disease

The Who - You Better, You Bet

You better you better you bet. oh
You better you better you bet. oh w
You better you better you bet.
You better you better you bet.

I call you on the telephone
My voice too rough with cigarettes.
I sometimes feel I should just go home
but I'm dealing with a memory that never forgets

I love to hear you say my name
    especially when you say yes
I got your body right now on my mind
but I drunk myself blind to the sound of old T-Rex, Mmmmm
To the sound of old T-Rex
    oh, and Who's Next

When I say I love you you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you you say you better
You better you better you bet
    You better bet your life
Or love will cut you, cut you like a knife

I want those feeble minded axes overthrown
I'm not into your passport picture, I just like your nose
You welcome me with open arms and open legs
I know only fools have needs, but this one never begs

I don't really mind how much you love me
    Ooh, a little is alright
    When you say
come over and spend the night
    Tonight
    Tonight

When I say I love you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
    You better bet your life
Or love will cut you,cut you like a knife

I lay on the bed with you
We could make some book of records
Your dog keeps licking my nose
And chewing up all those letters
    Saying "you better"

    You better bet your life

You better love me, all the time now
You better shove me back into line now
You better love me, all the time now
You better shove me back into line now.

    (Guitar Solo)

I showed up late one night
with a neon light for a visa
But knowing I'm so eager to fight
can't make letting me in any easier

I know I been wearing crazy clothes
and I look pretty crappy sometimes
But my body feels so good
and I still sing a razor line every time.

And when it comes to all night living
    I know what I'm giving
I've got it all down to a tee
    And it's free.

When I say I love you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I love you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you, you scream you better,Ooooo!
You better you better you bet
When I say I love you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I love you, you say you better
You better you better you bet
When I say I need you, you scream you better
You better you better you bet

    You better bet your life
Or love will cut you, just like a knife

    You better bet your life
Or love will cut you, just like a knife

And also songs with an odd timing. Oh! how many times I missed the opening line to this one because it's not where you think it should be.

The Cars - Touch And Go

OK... does this all make sense?

One of my favorite Devin songs of all time. The lyrics are stream-of-conscious, and the timing is all over the place. I never get the timing right on this one, especially the beginning "verses."

Sometimes it's not the entire song, but one section...

    YES - Hold On

I remember driving in the car one day, and when I got through the bolded out section with no flaws, I actually threw my fist in the air a let out a mighty YES!

Justice to the left of you
    Justice to the right
Speak when you are spoken to
    Don't pretend you're right
    This life's not for living
It's for fighting and for war
No matter what the truth is
Hold on to what is yours

    Jigsaw puzzle traitors
    Set to spill the beans
    Constitution screw up
    Shattering the dreams
    Blood flows in the desert
    Dark citadels burning too
    Watch! look over your shoulder
This one is strictly for you

    Hold on - hold on
    Wait maybe the answer's
    Looking for you

    Hold on - hold on
    Wait! take you time
    Think it through
Yes! I can make it through

    Hold on - hold on
    Sunshine shine on through
    Hold on - hold on
    Sunshine shine on you

    See it through

    Talk the simple smile
    Such platonic eye
How they drown in incomplete capacity
    Strangest of them all
    When the feeling calls
How we drown in stylistic audacity
    Charge the common ground
    Round and round and round
    We living in gravity

Shake - we shake so hard
    How we laugh so loud
    When we reach
    We believe in eternity

    I believe in eternity

    Hold on - hold on
    Wait - take your time
    Sunshine shine on through
    See it through
    Hold on - hold on
    Wait - maybe a chance
    Sunshine shine on through
    Is looking for you
    Sunshine shine on you

    Hold on - hold on
    Hold on - hold on

Sunshine - shine on shine on you
    Sunshine - shine on through
Sunshine - shine on shine on through
    Sunshine - shine on you

Sunshine - shine on - shine on you
    Hold on - hold on
    Sunshine - shine on through
    Wait - take your time
    See it through
Sunshine - shine on - shine on through
    Hold on - hold on
    Sunshine - shine on you
Wait - maybe the answer's looking for you

Dear God, reading those lyrics was actually depressing.

The distance the quality of main stream music has fallen is shocking.

    Boom boom pow.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

DONATE TO THE LINKS YA CHEAP BASTARDS!!!!

    Default The Much Hated...

Van Halen - Big Fat Money

I'll put up the live version so the haters can at least watch Ed play, but maybe they hate that also.

I still can't do this one and don't think I'll ever be able to.

Al, do you want a click on this one?
I don't need no stinkin' click!
    Two, three, four

Some say money is bad for the soul
Bad for the rock, bad for the roll
Bad for the heart, bad for the brain
Bad for damn near everything, oh yeah!

Oh. Hey, it must be good for somethin'
    Come on, pay the rent
    (Yes)

    Telephone, telefax, telefuckin' teletrash
Tell a cop, tell a friend, think we hit the stoney end
Nothin' left, nothin' right, now they want a bigger bite
Everybody wants some, everybody wants big money. Oh yeah!
    They want big fat money
That's what I want, big fat money

Too much temptation, 'nuff to kill a generation
    Space station, starvation, premature ejaculation
This ain't groovy, this ain't funky
It's on my back but it ain't my monkey, no! Oh yeah
Gimme some o' that big, big money
That's what I want, big fat money. Yo!
    Big, big money!

    (Guitar Solo)

Ow! Smoke this, eat that, my old lady's gettin' fat
High rise, high rent, before it's earned it's all been spent
Where's it gonna come from? Who's it gonna go to?
I ain't beatin', but I'm bein' eaten by money. Oh yeah
    Big big money. Woo!
Now gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!
Some o' that big money. Oh yeah
    That's what I want

Well all right (Big Money) Oh, big big money (Big Money)
Now gimme, gimme, gimme (Big money) some o' that big money (Money). Woo!
    That's what I want
    It's all I need
    Gimme big fat money
    Yeah, I gotta wallet full
    Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!
Grab me some a-that big fat money

    There is always this one:

If you mastered that, then maybe you can advance to the Great Big Sea version:

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes,
an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn,
world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak,, grunt, no, strength,
The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
    Look at that low playing!
    Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right - right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting.
    Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed. Uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.
    (I feel fine)

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev. Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine.

It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it. (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone) and I feel fine...

Never really tried that, but I can imagine!

I play hell with a couple of Clint Black songs - "Summer's Comin'" and "A Good Run Of Bad Luck". The lines just come one after another and finding a spot to take a breath is a challenge, for me anyway.

Great tune. I'm amazed that anyone not from Canada can catch some of those references.
