Default 35 Years Ago: VH Kicks Off First World Tour

    The date: March 3rd, 1978.

The place: The Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL.

Imagine a small theater with an extremely crowded backstage area which has no room for the opening bandís equipment. Add an inexperienced road crew, four pairs of 3 inch platform shoes, and an equipment truck with the headlights accidentally left on. What could possibly go wrong?

Out of curiousity, I would like to ask a question.

Sam and DLR always talk as if they never met each other before their 2002 tour, yet they toured together for eight weeks back in 1978.

What am I missing? I am not a Montrose fan, so I can only surmise that Sam was out of the band by then?

    Just curious.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Yeah, he was out of the band for 3 years at that point. They did share the same bill once or twice at big festivals, however (Sammy's solo band). I guess they never met, but Eddie did introduce himself to Sammy because he was a Montrose fan apparently.

Texas Jam was one, correct? What were the other dates/locations? Didn't Edward go up to Sam and tell him that he dug Montrose? Supposedly pissed Dave off.

    June 10, 1978 @ New Orleans Superdome.

    August 23, 1978 @ SummerFest , Anaheim Stadium

...and the Texxas Jam as you mentioned on June, 10, 1978.

All 3 shows were headlined by Boston and Black Sabbath.

Whoops, I was slightly mistaken about 2 of those shows.

I had quickly glanced at my concert bill poster folder and assumed they were all in 1978 because Boston headlined. Only the Anaheim show was in 1978 with Boston and Black Sabbath headlining. The other 2 were in 1979.

June 10 1979 @ " A Day Of Rock and Roll in New Orleans " Superdome.

Boston, Heart, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, Granadie Brothers.

    June 9 1979 @ " Texxas Jam" , Cotton Bowl.

Boston, Heart, Van Halen, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazereth, Sammy Hagar, TKO.

That was one heck of a show. My sunburn just finished healing last week.

Surprisingly (or not) Heart was right there with VH as the "best" live act of the show. Sammy also did very well...I never heard of him before that show and he kicked some butt.

VH hit the stage while the sun was still up and punched everyone in the face...it was awesome.

I have been to the Aragon countless times great place.
I never knew this and its cool that the 1st non Cali crowd to see VH was Chicago
The story was a cool read but some parts make no sense like when they said WB wanted them to play full-scale coliseums,it was their 1st tour no one knew them so what they did is what all bands do open for a bigger band.
The Aragon was a small theater with an extremely tiny backstage area is WRONG it holds 5-6 thousand with a gigantic backstage and pretty big stage.
Btw thank god they got rid of the stupid KISS inspired boots ..and when you think about it every idea Gene gave them or had didn't work thank god they got away from that fucking idiot he would have desroyed them.

It worked great for KISS (obviously since they are still going at it today).

But like most things, you can't just apply what works for one band and expect it to work for everyone. Both bands were about "fun"...but VH seemed more of a raw chaotic energy that required the ability to move at great speed in any direction on a moment's notice. KISS seemed to have everything choreographed down to the tiniest detail.

Just the thought of the "flying Eddie" or DLR leaping off the drum riser in those boots makes me giggle...
