    Default LENO OUT....AGAIN

Is NBC preparing to announce Jay Leno's departure from The Tonight Show?

The network says categorically no but two high-level industry sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that NBC is moving toward a May announcement that the 2013-14 television season will be the last for Leno as host of the long-running late-night show. Sources expect the network to move Jimmy Fallon from his Late Night spot into the coveted 11:35 time slot with a soft launch during the summer of 2014 before a formal fall kickoff.

A Leno rep says, "We do not speculate on rumor." Whether the network finally executes the Tonight transition plan remains to be seen. Anyone with even a passing sense of Leno’s personality knows that the hard-working comic would be reluctant to leave his perch, especially before his rival at CBS, David Letterman, announces his retirement. Leno and Letterman are both signed through 2014.

Sources believe the network will bring in Fallon in part out of concern about the competition on ABC, which moved younger-skewing Jimmy Kimmel to the 11:35 time slot in January. “The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the young audience goes that way, the harder it is for Jimmy [Fallon] to keep that audience,” says a source familiar with the network’s thinking.

Leno's Tonight still performs well for NBC, regularly besting his late-night rivals. But Kimmel is competitive in the 18-49 demo. "Kimmel has done extremely well," a network veteran says, adding that he is unaware of any contemplated Leno move. "Jay wins overall but on any given night it's neck-and-neck in 18-49. I understand where they might have fear and also feel that they own the solution [in Fallon.]"

Comcast, which owns NBC, in August imposed layoffs at Tonight. At the time, Leno took a big pay cut from his reported $30 million salary.

NBC could also be concerned that if Letterman does retire in 2014, CBS would be looking for a replacement, potentially opening the door to a bare-knuckles battle for Fallon that could mirror a previous tussle involving Conan O’Brien. In 2004, then-NBC head Jeff Zucker promised the then-Late Night host he would inherit The Tonight Show in 2009 as part of his deal to re-up with the network. But when NBC installed O'Brien at Tonight and moved Leno to 10pm, the strategy backfired, leading to an embarrassing feud and a costly 2010 settlement with O'Brien, who now hosts a show on TBS.

If NBC elects to announce the Leno-Fallon transition at or before the May upfronts, one observer adds, the network would “get the benefit of selling Jay’s last year — again.”

I see him leaving. He's been hammering NBC, and his deal is up in 2014. They'd better get his cooperation on this though.

I've heard that comics are being approached for Fallon's slot already.

Howard Stern: I'm taking over 'The Tonight Show'

Man, you give the guy a seat on the "America's Got Talent" judging panel and suddenly, he thinks he should take over everything.

On his radio show this morning on Sirius XM, Stern casually mentioned how he's going to "take over The Tonight Show" when addressing the public drubbing that Matt Lauer has received over Ann Curry's departure last summer.

Stern also refers to how Bob Greenblatt — NBC's Entertainment Chairman — told him how he's "got to take over the show."

An insider told EW that no such talks are happening — which makes sense, considering how Leno continues to dominate at 11:30 p.m.

During the February sweeps, The Tonight Show beat Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Show with David Letterman among adults 18-49 (1.003 million versus Letterman's 920,000 and Kimmel's 898,000) and attracted a bigger audience (3.5 million viewers versus Letterman's 3.2 million and Kimmel's 2.5 million). Still, rumors persist about a possible succession plan in 2014 that would involve Jimmy Fallon assuming the 11:30 p.m. time slot.

Stern likes to talk trash about Leno. Last August, Stern claimed that reports about Leno taking a pay cut to limit staff reductions was not the entire truth. "Jay wanted to cut staff. He's embarrassed to do it. He didn't want to come off as a bad guy.

NBC took the hit for him, because they're a corporation...My bullsh-t meter is going off all over the place," he said. Stern also said he's been "feuding" with Leno for years.

Always thought Howard could handle the 12:30 slot easy.

He would be good. Not like he actually has time to do three shows, hell he only does his radio show live three days a week now.

Howard has become everything he used to make fun of....Co-host of an awful, 3rd rate network talent show, plastic surgery, house in the Hamptons, vapid blond gold-digging wife, and the wig. Damn, that wig makes him look ridicules.

I've listened since Howard came to Boston back in '92. His show today is nowhere near what it was when he had the talents of Billy West and Jackie Martling. When Stern lost them then KC, SJ, and finally Artie the show has become stale.

When he had an edge to push and the people there who could push it, Howard was the greatest. Today? Long past his prime.

His wife is a gold digger? Why do you say that, because she's pretty? He doesn't have a wig geez. Do you know what a wig is?

Obviously you don't like him anymore and are looking for stupid shit to complain about.

I don't miss Jackie at all, Artie grew on me and I miss him. Unfortunately he tried to kill himself.

The show is fine. It's a radio show for mindless entertainment. I don't give a shit if it pushes any boundaries.

Stern has always had that crazy hair. That's no wig!

and from everything I hear about his wife Beth, she is anything but a gold digger. She had a successful modeling career and now spends a great deal of time working on animal charities

plus I have never seen a mean word written about her in the press and they say it is not because anyone fears retaliation from Stern, but because she is just so nice and grounded that there really isn't any dirt to spill

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Agree Daisy. She's done nothing. And she's very charitable. She's never in the spotlight, she rarely comes on his show and is completely down to earth...just idiotic nonsense to call her a gold digger.
