Default Rolling Stone QA: David Lee Roth Vents About Van Halen's Future

Not sure if anyone has seen this yet. Sounds as if Dave's getting impatient! Frankly, I don't blame him!

Interesting that Dave says Van Halen isn't quite the same without Mike and his high tenor vocals.

Must suck to those who love to dismiss his importance to VH. At least Dave knows what's up.

Yeah, that was something that stood out with me as well. Something else that stood out, I guess the songs they worked on with Dave for the Best of in 1996 and in 2000-2001 weren't new?

I was just going to quote that.....It has been reported that Dave himself had dismissed the contributions of MA over the years..... apparently those who felt that were incorrect.

Interesting too that Dave talks to Alex every day.....they seem to be on the same page as far as the bands future.....but it sounds as if Ed and Wolf are calling the shots.

I thought that was VERY interesting as well. It sounds like Dave and Alex are ready to go out and do something...like now, but Eddie is holding things up. Also interesting that Dave and Alex stay in touch all the time but Ed and Dave don't.

"Clearly, vocals are every bit as much a component of success as a rhythm section or a guitar solo, and there's an old expression saying, "They don't go home singing the lighting show, they don't go home singing the production." You're right, they sing my words and my melodies. And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that's intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion" -DLR

That was a great tribute to Mike. It's also good to see that the old Dave & Alex relationship is there. Hey, the fact that they talk every day is pretty telling. Also, it seems like Dave and Al are trying to give Ed a kick in the ass.

Fans shouldn't get too worked-up, but I wasn't really happy with what I read. Dave pushing for Mike to return? I doubt Ed would be happy to hear Dave publicly lobbying for the band to presumably kick out Worf and replace him with Mike--if that's what he was doing.

I know this is the future and not the pasture, but it sounds like Dave wants the original Four Horseman to saddle up and ride again. This Dave has never given up hope that it will happen.

    Good for Dave!

That was a good tribute to Mike and imo opinion says a lot. He wants a CVH reunion, it's evident. Sounds like Ed still doesn't get it in regards to dragging his feet with writing. Wasting time is his forte.

Damn, that is one of the best and most coherent interviews that DLR has given in a LONG time.

I really liked his little dig at himself in which he fully admits to formerly being egocentric and a control freak, but now just wanted to be part of the team, any team.

Cool read. Hopefully Ed doesn't think his praise of Mike is a condemnation of Wolf.

Wish he would just go ahead and release the album he did with John 5. Sounds like nothing that would be seem as competing with VH.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Yeah, those background vocals apparently were pretty important after all weren't they? Part of the signature sound that MANY said wasn't a big enough contribution. They are to DLR.
