For me, off the top of my head, it would probably be Exile on Main Street, Quadrophenia, or Frampton Comes Alive.

Exile on Main Street never gets old.

Black Crowes "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" is a great double album.

Always had a soft spot for "Rattle and Hum".

That's a tough question, made tougher in the CD era when a lot of single discs would've been double albums. Not counting live, greatest hits or soundtracks (otherwise, it might just be FM!), I might just have to go with London Calling. I love the Wall, but with the exception of a few songs, it's best to be taken as a whole (then again, maybe that qualifies it for the top spot in the most legit way!); The Beatles, Exile On Main Street, Physical Graffiti and Tusk have songs I could probably live without (and also with Physical Graffiti, knowing that about half of the songs were really recorded for other albums works against it in my mind, too).

just for grins I went and looked at post-1987 albums in my collection that are longer than Hysteria (which pretty much pushed the limit for how much you could put on a single disc of vinyl) and there weren't any that I found indispensable - yeah, there were the Use Your Illusions that each would've been double albums, but again, they could've easily cut enough from each of those to make a single record (or two single records which then in itself might've been a double album instead of two separate releases!). Aerosmith's Nine Lives I think is one of their better latter day albums, but again, not good enough to where I need to hear it often; a couple of the Stone's albums would've qualified but they all suffer from the "too much of a good thing" thing that's happened since the advent of the CD. So I'm sticking with London Calling!

    Exile
    Physical
    The White Album
.....next to impossible to rank these as anything less then the best....where they rank umoint themselves? That's each individual's call.

    The next layer would be

    The Wall
    London Calling

I would have to say Exile. Physical Graffiti would be a close 2nd.
The Wall has it's moments but it's just not a complete classic like Exile and PG are to me.
As for more recent albums I agree that Black Crowes "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" is a great double album, it's a unique album in that it was recorded live in front of a small audience but it's not really considered a "Live album" in the traditional sense. I also enjoyed quite a bit of the Chili Pepper's Stadium Arcadium too, but there is a lot of filler on there.
