Default 2nd-grader suspended over imaginary grenade

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/...224740937.html

I think this is getting out of hand.... Who didn't do this as a kid? Since I was a big Dawn of the Dead fan as a kid, I loved to pretend that I was a zombie killer. Now that would get me suspended from school. ugh.

as a kid...hell i still lob imaginary grenades all over the place. My little world would look like swiss cheese if they were real. I remember playing war games in school in 2nd grade with hot wheels being the grenade of choice cause they were all metal of course.

Anne Arundel second-grader suspended for chewing his pastry into the shape of a gun

A 7-year-old Anne Arundel County boy was suspended Friday for chewing his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun and saying, “bang, bang”— an offense that the school described as a threat to other students, according to his family.

The pastry “gun” was a rectangular strawberry-filled bar, akin to a Pop-Tart, that the second-grader had tried to nibble into the shape of a mountain, but then found it looked more like a gun, said his father, William “B.J.” Welch.

Welch said an assistant principal at Park Elementary School told him that his son pointed the pastry at a classmate. The boy maintains he pointed it at the ceiling, according to his father.

“In my eyes, it’s irrelevant; I don’t care who he pointed it at,” Welch said. “It was harmless. It was a danish.”

The boy’s two-day suspension Friday comes at a time of heightened sensitivity about security issues and guns— even pretend guns — in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 children and six school staff members dead.

In the 11 weeks since the massacre, at least two young children in the Washington region have been suspended for pointing their fingers like guns, and a 10-year-old in Alexandria was arrested by police for showing a toy gun to others on his school bus. In Pennsylvania, a 5-year-old was suspended for talking about shooting her Hello Kitty bubble gun.

Anne Arundel officials said Monday that they could not comment on the case because of confidentiality laws. Bob Mosier, a school system spokesman, said a letter was sent home to families at the elementary school.

The letter, posted on the school’s Web site, says a student “used food to make inappropriate gestures that disrupted the class.” It says no “physical threats” were made and no one was harmed, but that if children are troubled, parents should “help them share their feelings.” A school counselor will be on hand to assist this week, the letter says. “In general, please remind them of the importance of making good choices,” said the letter, signed by assistant principal Myrna Phillips.

The father of the suspended second-grader said he got a call Friday about 9:20 a.m., not long after his son arrived at the school in Brooklyn Park. He said he pressed the assistant principal about whether anyone was scared by the pastry incident.

Someone could have been, he said he was told.

The father said he had high regard for the school and a strong relationship with administrators, so the episode was puzzling.

“I feel this is just a direct result of society feeling that guns are evil and guns are bad . . . and if you make your pastry into a gun, you’re going to be the next Columbine shooter,” Welch said.

Welch has followed news accounts of other suspensions of the very young and contends that educators are going overboard, which is why he said he went public with his son’s case.

“Kids are losing time in school for nothing more than playing,” he said, adding that there could be long-term consequences when such incidents are written into student records with references to guns or threats.

What if his son gets turned down for a security clearance when he’s in his 20s, he asked, because of a pretend gun offense at age 7? “That may sound far-fetched but, you know what, in today’s world, it’s possible,” he said.

Welch said his 7-year-old has three brothers and all are “typical” boys. “They wrestle, and they do the things that boys do,” he said. The children have Nerf guns at home, and the boy’s grandfather is an avid hunter. Welch is a strong supporter of gun rights.

The child was sent home on out-of-school suspension Friday and was due to serve in-school suspension Monday. Welch said he had been asked to go to the school for a meeting Monday.

“Honestly, I think he was just kind of doing what kids do,” he said of his son. “To him, it was just a game, and to the school it was more than that.”
