Default Texas Lesson Plan Instructs 6th Graders to Design Flags for a New Socialist Nation

A curriculum system used across the state of Texas reportedly includes a lesson plan for 6th graders instructing students to create a flag for a new socialist nation using symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism.

The following was taken from the CSCOPE curriculum lesson plan: Notice socialist/communist nations use symbolism on their flags representing various aspects of their economic system. Imagine a new socialist nation is creating a flag and you have been put in charge of creating a flag. Use symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism on your flag. What kind of symbolism/colors would you use?

Upon discovering the controversial material, members of the Texas Senate Education Committee grilled the creators of the CSCOPE curriculum system in a hearing on Thursday.

Several witnesses testified before the committee and accused the program of promoting far-left, anti-Christian values while others called the program openly socialist, the Star-Telegram reports. Other critics said it is difficult for non-teachers to review the program.

Discontent is rampant across the state, said Peggy Venable, the Texas director of Americans for Prosperity.

Wade Lebay, director of state CSCOPE at the Region 13 Education Service Center in Austin, defended the program and its content.

Its built by teachers, designed by teachers and thats whats powerful about CSCOPE, Lebay said.

In regards to the assignment asking students to create a flag for a new socialist nation, first-term Sen. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) asked whether the assignment makes it appear that were sympathizing with those types of countries.

He went on to call the lesson plan very egregious as a Texas and an American.

Linda Villarreal, director of the Region 2 Education Service Center in Corpus Christi, further defended the assignment and accused lawmakers of singling out just this one assignment.

Sen. Donna Campbell (R-San Marcos) argued that CSCOPE also reinforces uniformity in Texas schools.

Our teachers dont need to be scripted, Campbell said.

TheBlazes Mike Opelka previously reported that the same curriculum, CSCOPE, also includes a lesson plan that calls the Boston Tea Party an act of terrorism.

The following was included in the lesson plan on the Boston Tea Party:

News report: New Act of Terrorism

A local militia, believed to be a terrorist organization, attacked the property of private citizens today at our nations busiest port. Although no one was injured in the attack, a large quantity of merchandise, considered to be valuable to its owners and loathsome to the perpetrators, was destroyed. The terrorists, dressed in disguise and apparently intoxicated, were able to escape into the night with the help of local citizens who harbor these fugitives and conceal their identities from the authorities. It is believed that the terrorist attack was a response to the policies enacted by the occupying countrys government. Even stronger policies are anticipated by the local citizens.

[T]his lesson comes from a non-profit group called CSCOPE. They are an offshoot of an educational program that traces its roots back to 1965 when the state established media centers / Education Service Centers (ESCs) throughout each of the states 20 school districts,

Admittedly, I only skimmed through the initial article - but, on the surface, I don't see any problem with this element of the curriculum being taught.

As every teacher (and parent) knows, one of the best ways to 'deal' with difficult and controversial topics is not to bury, ignore, dismiss, or repudiate them but, instead, tackle them head-on and examine them from a variety of angles.

In this case, that includes 'immersion' of sorts, discussion, imagining and re-creating scenarios...These techniques enable students to understand all the issues involved - and with greater understanding, students are better-placed to make meaningful and informed decisions about what's good or bad, right or wrong.

I've had to do assignments like this before where you design something as if you're a part of a particular group. It's no big deal.

Unfortunately, CSCOPE has an agenda. To teach the Boston Tea Party as an act of terrorism is flat out disgusting.

But, Brooky, if you read the article you've posted here, there is no evidence, NONE, of this organisation referring to the Tea-Party as a terrorist group.

I think the writers of the article are the ones with the agenda, to be honest, as the way the paragraphs are set out leads one to believe that CSCOPE are creating lesson-plans that directly implicate the Tea-Party in terrorist activity - when, in fact, it doesn't seem that way at all. At least not from what I'm reading here. The initial starting-point (possibly many lessons previously) may have been the Tea-Party - but the resultant activities in the classroom don't have to be 'about' them at all, if that makes sense!

You need to undertand that this is how lesson-plans work (they're part of an over-riding 'scheme of work' that may take up an entire term - or semester). During a term teaching a literary text, I may well have to touch upon issues that are deemed controversial - and the ensuing discussion might lead me to do something very similar to the task being mooted by this CSCOPE organisation. It doesn't mean that I have some sort of agenda - more that I am trying to get students to think 'around' a topic, explore it - and come to their own conclusions.

    There's a difference?

    Must admit, I haven't a clue.

I'm just glad you weren't the parent of one of MY pupils - bloody hell, you'd have been in school 24/7, demanding I be strapped to the ducking-stool forthwith!

She's from England...probably didn't hit their radar in school.

    Dibblekins, (from Wikipedia):

The Boston Tea Party...was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, a city in the British colony of Massachusetts, against the tax policy of the British government and the East India Company that controlled all the tea imported into the colonies. On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and other political protests often refer to it.

Thanks, bsbll4 - you're right - it wasn't a big element of the British curriculum. That - and I dropped history at age 13.

Nevertheless, Brooky doesn't need to worry unduly. I was aware that there were two separate movements / organisations / whatever you'd like to call them - but the finer details had escaped me, I'll admit!

It doesn't take away from my central point, however: The lesson plan cited in the article doesn't once refer to the Tea-Party (Boston or otherwise!); you are being mislead (deliberately, it would seem) by the writers of the article, who appear to have no clue how schemes of work are organised - and who seem to have some sort of agenda of their own, in fact.

Seriously, the amount of paranoia/fear/fatalistic yammering on this site is fucking STUNNING.
