    Default Sammy's Capitol-era albums

Nine On a Ten Scale (1976)
Sammy Hagar (The Red album) (1977)
    Musical Chairs (1977)
    All Night Long (live) (1978)
    Street Machine (1979)
    Danger Zone (1980)
    Live 1980 (1983)

While most people are familiar with Sam's Geffen and post-VH albums, these earlier albums from the 70s are worth checking out if you aren't familiar with them. I bought them all in high school when they were reissued. I really liked Danger Zone and think that is one of the strongest albums Sammy ever released. I don't really care for Street Machine, but the others are all pretty good, solid, 70s rock. The two live albums are outstanding. These albums may sound dated and some would call this music "buttock," but I like it.

I also bought these when I was younger when they were reissued on cd. IMHO, these are some pretty underrated 70's hard rock records.

I bought them all around 2007 when they were reissued in England I think, I forget the name of the label. I like them all though, especially the self-titled or "Red"

I had them all on cassette except for Danger Zone, which I never found. I'd be interested to purchase them on CD if they were ever remastered.

I've asked this question before, but forget the answer. Does Sammy own all his recordings?

I think I had them before they were reissued on cassette...I'm not sure actually. I like them for the most part, you can tell he was really pushing material out. Stuff like This planet's on fire and into the night are great songs.

Great point about the live albums being outstanding. They sound great and those two live albums really capture the raw energy of Sammy from back then. The long intro into Trans Am always fires me up. The Rematch & More CD is a nice compilation of the studio albums.

sammy has nothing to do with his capital era recordings, when he opted out of the capitol deal one of the stipulations was that they (capitol) owned his recordings from that time. That's why whenever there was a vh album or a sammy album after he left vh there was always some kind of repackaged capitol era remasters package that suddenly hit the racks. Usually they were always the same exact songs too....sammy had nothing to do with them.

I had the Best of Sammy Hagar a few years after I became a fan, and I got the rest of them all in the late-90s on CD and cassette. Since then I replaced the Best Of with Rematch (and More) because I think that's the only official greatest hits from that era. And oddly enough I couldn't find Danger Zone on tape either.

Loving Sammy as much a fan possibly can, I still have to say after all of these years that his '70s stuff--outside of the first Montrose album--is nowhere near as great as his '80s solo and Wabo's material. Not even close. The only song I love from that era is "Red." Don't get me wrong, I know all those '70s tunes and like them, but the only one that would be in my faves column would be his signature song from that era.

And I think Paper Money is his least best album overall.

I always liked Paper Money. I never understood why that album never got anywhere near the recognition and praise as the debut. My favorite Montrose album may have actually been their third album, Warner Brothers Presents, with singer Bob James.

All Night Long was also released as Live, Loud & Clear.

There's a load of compilation albums from that era too, Red Hot, Red Alert - Dial 9, Centre Hole etc etc.

Paper Money has a couple of great, great songs on it. I really like thier version of Connection...it's so f'n good and it has totally been forgotten. The most under-rated song sammy ever did ( up until his time in van halen) has got to be I got the fire....that song is awesome.

I LOVE Sammy's version of Catch the Wind from the Red album, it has been known to send chills down my arms if the time is right.

If I recall correctly Sammy once encouraged bootlegging, burning etc, of his capitol catalogue, he doesn't make a penny off of it.

The Live albums and the Red-Album get the most spinsDon't know if they sound well on CD, might sound "dated" digitally, but I still have the actual LPs and play them regularly.

One of my favorite Montrose tunes is actually also with Bob James, after Sammy left - "Let's Go" from Jump On it.

I have Jump On It (the library had it) and Warner Brothers Presents (bought it for 4.99 on Itunes), they are not bad. Bob James sounds like Eric Martin from Mr. Big at times to me.
