Default Official eras of Van Halen?

Forgive me if this isn't interesting enough to start a new thread, but I believe it is and besides that, I don't see where else to post it.

With everything that's happened in VH land over the years, I always wondered what their official eras were, in terms of years.

I've always said and still would say:

    David Lee Roth Era: 1974-1985, 1996, 2006-
    Sammy Hagar Era: 1985-1996, 2003-2006
    Gary Cherone Era: 1996-1999

Many say VH started in '73 pre-Mikey when Mark Stone was the bassist, but I disagree. Why wouldn't you go further back with The Broken Combs, Trojan Rubber Company, etc. with that argument then? The original official line-up was the four guys on their first album. Michael Anthony was their bassist from then until the new millennium, the vast portion of their career thus far. Mark was never on an officially-released VH recording.

Plus, they changed their name from "Mammoth" to "Van Halen" in '74 when Mike was their bassist. The only Stone argument that would have any merit would be that some of the songs they wrote with him at the time later went on to become official VH songs. But I think the enter-Mike/name-change thing trumps it. So that's where I get 1974 over '73.

Obviously Dave quit April Fool's Day or right around then in 1985 and Sammy joined months later which led to their official recorded first album with him in '86 so no debate there.

Sammy was fired/quit on Father's Day 1996, and Dave was back. Even though it wasn't "official" per the band, they did officially release 2 news songs with him that year. So I count '96 for Dave. Gary obviously joined late that year as well, so '96 counts for him, too. Mitch Malloy was in before that and accepted the job, but they didn't release anything, so no counting that. And who knows how far they got with Scandal and others in '85 anyways. But remembering that they actually had three singers in one year...wow, what a year. Then Gary officially, and amicably for once, quit in November of '99.

Dave was secretly (despite the beginning of the Internet rumor-mongering) back in the band in both 2000 and '01, recorded music, but it was of course not released. So no go there. Sammy said that he and Alex started talking again in late 2003 (around New Year's Eve wasn't it?), so I would say--because they later officially reunited the next year--'03 counts for him.

Now 2006 is the trickiest one. Sammy pretty much checked out of the band after the tour in '04. He said it himself in an interview right after the tour, but also said that The Wabo's were his main band, and VH was his side band. Joking around, sure, but there was also some seriousness to that statement. So he didn't officially leave yet is the point.

Plus...remember that the official Van Halen web site had the group shot picture with Sammy from '04 all the way up until 2006? It wasn't until around midway '06 when they took that pic down and replaced it with the original logo. I remembered it vividly because, despite The Other Half tour that year and Mikey's candid magazine interview, I was still hoping Sammy and Mike were still in the band and the picture on their site gave hope. Until they changed it. Fortunately, I figured that must have meant some new type of excitement, DLR-style, and it did.

I remember later in '06 when Dave was marketing "Strummin'" on TV he said ARMBI and that he and the band have been speaking. So that's why I count '06 for both Sam and Dave. And then in late '06 the Roth rumors that started in '00 were back and stronger than ever. And truer than ever.

But then (and this is what prompted me to write all this), I saw this link:

    http://www.billboard.com/articles/ne...ion-inevitable

This is from right at the beginning of '06 when his radio show started. He said the same thing about ARMBI and that, more importantly, as of 1/3/06, he spoke to Alex "about a week ago." Why don't I remember this? And, it was from a Pittsburgh newspaper and that's where I fuckin' live! Speaking to Alex again is kind of a big deal. But, then again he did follow that with, "And I think, eventually, the inevitable will happen." So I guess things were looking up at that point for the first time since '00, but not strongly enough.

So he did his radio gig, promoted the bluegrass album, toured, and not until later in the year probably pushed for it more. Then teamed up again with Alex, Eddie, and now, Wolfgang. But anyways, I think the Van Hagar picture on their official web site trumps it and that Sam was officially--although on the outs--their lead singer for the first half of the year...technically.

And I don't count Wolfie as VH4, although I supposed you could. I just go by the singers.

I know, I know, it's beyond anal retentive. But thoughts?

I think we all channel in and out of being anal about VH sometimes.

I think the 'eras' really come down to subjectivity. To me, there are only three eras: Roth, Hagar, and Cherone. I can see how for some people they may say that this current line up is not Van Halen but Van Halen* meaning once Mike is back then it will mean something. Some may say that III was so insignificant and short-lived that the time with Cerone is not an 'era'. Fair enough,

When I think of eras for bands, I go with recordings.....Van Halen recorded under 4 different lineups, so IMO there are 4 eras of VH

    CVH Era

    Van Hagar Era

    III Era

    Wolfgang Era

It totally depends on what you mean by 'era.' I mean, according to this, Van Halen didn't even exist from 1999-2003. Obviously Eddie and others were in a horrible state then and there were no tours, recording, or band activity. So it depends if you want to say Van Halen was temporarily disbanded, or if you want to say that this was their 'hiatus era.'

No offense to any singers out there...but it's not all about them. This line of thinking ignores the rest of the band as if they aren't a factor...including the guy who wrote all the music.

One could separate "eras" in many ways.

    The Fast and loose Era
'78-'80. First three albums they popped into the studio and threw it down pretty much live. There was an energy about that...but also occasional slop (WACF).

    The Fair Warning Era
Eddie got to be more in charge and more time was spent working on it.

    The Pop Era
Diver Down and 1984. Dave and Templeman got them thinking about hits. MTV videos enter the picture.

    The I stopped Caring Era
1986....Eddie back in charge. The crazy fun went away. I got the sense Eddie didn't care as much about guitar playing.

We could all probably put together our own eras.

    and...

I think we must have very different perceptions of what constitutes "fun" then - because from all the footage and interviews I've seen, they certainly looked like they were having loads of "crazy fun" together...In fact, to coin an Americanism, those guys looked, for all the world, like they were "having a blast"!

As for Eddie ceasing to care about his playing - that's definitely debatable. Arguably, the songs written during that period were more complex; they required a considerable range of technical skills, combined with a real sense of melody - and, more to the point, suggested that here was a man who was really enjoying his guitar.

I appreciate that you don't like the 'Hagar Era' (and that's fine) - but there's opinion and then there's just being...Wrong.

Look, I don't care that you don't care about Van Hagar, but to say that Eddie didn't care as much about guitar playing then is objectively false. This is beyond hyperbole; it is an outright falsehood.
