Finish What Ya Started is great song. One of the few Sammy songs on my iPod.

The "Right Now" video, while a cool video, was never a favorite of mine. Didn't fit the band as far as I was concerned. Didn't fit the positive, uplifting quality of the song.

I think the video got made because of the alternative music scene emerging at the time. Someone was trying to make VH seem "hip and relevant". Kurt Cobain had ripped VH for never addressing any "issues" and just being a "big dumb rock band". I know the vast majority of us here couldn't care less what kurt thought, but I think the bands management did, saw what was happening with all the other 80's hard rock bands at the time.

I remember groaning the first time I saw the video. Rants against aids, racism, birth control, corrupt government. While all important issues, not exactly usual VH material. Just seemed all so overly "PC" to me at the time.

The video went on to win Mtv's video of the year award. So, what the hell do i know? lol

pretty harmless stuff IMHO, Sammy just kind of giving his 2 cents about things, not being too in depth about things.

I might be in the minority but I think the band skipping video's for 5150 was a good idea for guys at the time. They were probably one of the only bands that could get away with it and still sell a shit load of records.

I like the WIL video, the idea of the guys playing at an empty bar is cool as hell to me.

fun little watch but nothing earth shattering.

I didn't watch all of it but from what I saw, it was pretty neat.

I always like the 'Right Now' video because it was something different and it was done well.

There are some huge gaps in my knowledge of the Hagar era, so that video was pretty educational for me! Not that we didn't already know, but Van Halen sure seemed like a riot back then.

And I really like the Right Now video. To me, the mix between 'serious' commentary and goofiness is just right to fight the lyrics and the band image.

Thanks for posting that, very interesting to watch.

I had no idea there was even a video for Amsterdam. Now I want to see the whole clip.

My college roomate gave me a ton of shit about the Right Now vid. He was a huge grungehead, who was into all of the early nineties PC stuff. I liked basic hard rock - Metallica, AC/DC, Van Halen. etc. I maintained that VH didn't have a "social conscience" and didn't need one. This video undercut the claim a bit.

I think Right Now is a good stadium anthem, like Jump, Panama, etc.

Because smelling like a deoderant (Teen Spirit) is definitely a relevant thing to sing about! (I used to love Nirvana, guess I get more cynical about them being the 'face of grunge' as every year goes by).

I liked the video. Poundcake was always a really cool looking video to me, very similar to Runaround in its big lights-live-playing thing. The turning stage in the middle was super cool too. All of it pretty much blew me away as a teenager, and I really could just watch the entire song from Headstock-Cam on Eddie.
If I told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what I've gone through over the last 20 odd years, what it took to finally get where I am, people just wouldn't fucking believe it. So it's pointless. I now realize that I can't change people's minds, and I really don't want to or need to try. I'm at peace with it, and that's all that matters. - Edward Van Halen

Thanks, that was a fun watch. Sammy sure does have a weird mental block about when he left the band, though. Last year he said he hadn't been in the band in about 20 years, I've read where he's said their last album together was around 1992 or 1993, and in this he says they broke up shortly after the "Right Now" video. It was five years later. Maybe he checked out mentally shortly after the Carnal Knowledge album and tour and he just doesn't realize he was still in the band until 1996.

Sammy's doing the interviews because no one else in Van Halen will. Save for current band matters. If you ask the band: there never was a Sammy era. Therefore, if you want to do any kind of retrospective, you have to talk to Sam or Mike.
