Default Novice Question on Installing New RAM Memory to Computer

I have had a Dell Desktop for about 10 years now.

It's a Dimension 4550. It came with Windows XP Pro and a Pentium 4 Processor at 2.53GHz.

It also came with 256MB DDRSDRAM at 333MHz.

Today, I removed the 256MB, and installed a 1GB 333MHz Memory (It was a Patriot Memory from Fry's for $25). I did not realise how hard you had to push the memory board for it to be seated well in the slot... but I figured that out...)

When I statred the computer, I got an information screen that said my memory had changed, and I could:

Press F1 to Continue (which is what I did), Or

I could Press F2 for the Set Up Utility

My Question is ---- Should I have pressed the F2 to go the set up utilit, and if I did that, what would I do when I got there???

Pressing F2 would have given you the option to set up how your memory is used by your system but I wouldnt worry too much about it. Motherboards now days are smart enough to know what to do with it. The best way to make sure your system is accepting the new memory is to right click on "My computer" -> properties and then it should tell you how much memory you have installed. If it says 1gb, then you're good to go.

    Thanks.

Yes, I right-clicked on My Computer, and it shows 1.00 GB of Ram.

I think that the OS was smart enough to know what do with the new ememory. It looks like everything is running fine now.

Some company I was dealing with wanted to do a diagnostic, but that reuqired at least 512MB of RAM, so now, with 1GB, I should have no issues with running diagnostics.

I had never opened the Dell tower before, and after 9 years of stting on my desk, there was some amount of dust inside. I blew most of that away with compressed air.

You know you can always run the px4 x drive key. Which will then run the bios mod 45 Q compu drive. Green screen times 2 and then a basic work up from there. Dell is kinda odd like that. Out.

The slowness of loading some Forum sites is now gone.

Spending $25 to increase my RAM Memory to 1 GB was the best and most cost-effective upgrade I have ever done to my Home Computer !

Now defragment your hard drive "My computer/c/properties/tools" once every month (set up a schedule for when you never use the machine) and you'll be zippin' along like nobody's bizness!
