A U.S. official says retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has died. He was 78.

The official tells The Associated Press that Schwarzkopf died Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The official wasn't authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A much-decorated combat soldier in Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was known popularly as "Stormin' Norman" for a notoriously explosive temper.

He lived in retirement in Tampa, where he had served in his last military assignment as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command. That is the headquarters responsible for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly 20 countries from the eastern Mediterranean and Africa to Pakistan.

Wouldn't it be strange if GHW Bush died around the same time. RIP Stormin' Norman.

I was in Desert Storm, he had those Mercs body guards around him all the time, but he was very personable.

I think it was Stormin' Norman who, during a press briefing, showed a video of the bombing runs made the previous night. After briefly describing the targets and their strategic value, a new image popped up of a building and Schwarzkopf says "and this is my Iraqi counterpart's office..." as it flashes from a bomb blast and disintegrates.

There was actual laughter in the room from the press.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

In his autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero," Schwarzkopf outlined the reasons that coalition forces didn't press on to the Iraqi capital during the first Gulf War.

"Had the United States and the United Kingdom gone on alone to capture Baghdad, under the provisions of the Geneva and Hague conventions we would have been considered occupying powers and therefore would have been responsible for all the costs of maintaining or restoring government, education and other services for the people of Iraq." Schwarzkopf wrote that had "we taken all of Iraq, we would have been like a dinosaur in the tar pit -- we would still be there, and we, not the United Nations, would be bearing the costs of that occupation."

Hmm, he was a little smarter than G.W. Bush, kind of hard to imagine, but there it is.

    Sarcasm mode now off.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.
