Default Congress: If our children are not protected, we will take aggressive action on games

    http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged...201644620.html

Ain't it funny how quick they are to "take action" in regards to limiting americans freedom, but they can't come to an agreement in regards to the national debt. Scum sucking bastards.

Obama was pathetic yesterday (12/21/12) with his media face time agendas.

Not like me to be so vocal on such subjects, but what a piece of Presidential Shit!

Not that I would ever be in favor of something like this; but since our elected officials and appointed judges apparently disregard common sense and clearly stated freedoms anyway...

How about creating a law punishing parents who buy their underage kids violent video games? Parents have the final say, not video game developers or creators. Video games are merely another form of artistic expression and utilize the same content tools that movies, television, books, and when you analyze it, all forms of media have done since communication between humans was invented.

Video games with mature content are already labeled as such, just like movies and television. What more can we do besides take away free speech? If you don't like the content of something, don't use it, watch it, click on it, or search it out. It's simple.

As a dad of two gamers, I researched this exact subject extensively and the bottom line (as stated in the article) is there is no correlation between violent games and violent behavior. I'm talking correlation. Never mind causation.

That said, I still don't let my boys play Grand Theft Auto and other games like it, because the violence is too realistic. I let them play fantasy games and sci-fi games with violence in them because that violence is cartoon-ish (think purple blood and green guts in Halo).

It's a weird line I've drawn, but the point is, as a parent, this is my decision. This is my job.

Seems perfectly reasonable. Bottom line is games like GTA are really targeted and ment to be played by older gamers.

So many parents look at the game console as a babysitting service and dont even bother checking or taking an interest in what the kids are doing on it.

yep, I don't blame the manufacturers as much as they do label the games. My problem is when I forbid those games in my house, but my kids could go to any other house in the neighbourhood to play them because none of the other parents felt the same way. Didn't seem to matter how old the other kids were, either. The only thing I ask of the gaming companies is that they try a little harder to use their imagination to come up with more games that stress positive competition (and make them affordable, for crying out loud).

This, to me, is no different than those idiots from the PMRC in the 80's, trying to find an easily identifiable target which is magically responsible for all mental illness and violent culture in the U.S. and abroad.

The NRA is doing the same thing, erroneously claiming that rather than be concerned about who has access to guns, they turn it into a "good/evil" dichotomy and suggest that we need more guns. I really don't care what people's opnions are on gun control, there's no denying that these half-ass, brain dead solutions will do nothing to curb these disturbing acts in the U.S.

I'm not suggesting some grandoise solution here, I don't think anyone has one and the problem is they all think they do, and they think this right off the top of their collective heads rather than engaging in serious, meaningful discussions built around better policy and public safety.

As for gaming itself, no amount of government control or policy will stop a money making giant or even curb it's often violent depictions, stronger communities and better parenting should be the focal point of that debate IMHO.

As an avid gamer, this stuff pisses me off. The NRA Guy is just redirecting the misplaced blame he is getting to another industry. There are already warnings on games and a rating system similar to movies. R rated movies are no more responsible than music which are no more responsible than video games which are no more responsible than porn on the Internet.

If you'll permit, I'd like to drag a comment of mine from the school shooting thread to this one. It fits here as well.

My wife and my daughter's friends, and even some of our friends think we're "strange" for not having a gaming system in the house for the kids to play. At my house, my wife and I insist our kids read, go on the internet and explore topics of things we talk about in the house.

Some of our friends say that the video game system is the only way they can "talk to their kids." They use it as an opportunity to open a line of communication. In my mind, they failed to parent properly. You've decided to let your kid dictate how the household is being run.

I mean as much as it annoys me that we don't have more than the bare-bones cable plan, (I love History Channel, TruTV, etc) I'm finally understanding the benefit of these two choices we've made.

As you saw in the pictures I posted a few pages back, we do things as a family, shooting being one of them. We don't sit on our asses watching nothing but TV. Our kids don't play video games at our house (their other parent is a different mater), they are consistently at the top of their class as far as achievements go. They're friends with ALL the kids, not just a select clique.

I'm not going to say that that choice makes us better parents. Because they still play video games, just not non-stop, as our ex's limit the amount of time they play the systems at their house. They're exposed to firearms, but have a healthy respect for them and know they're not toys.

I'll admit, I have a an unhealthy addiction to Facebook. But I primarily use it to have fun. I post innocuous things to try and illicit a laugh, or open up serious dialogue about topics. Or I post pictures of things happening around, and to my life. To give you an example:

    Quote:
DMad: I know your supposed to limit being on your foot, but that's no excuse to be completely lazy.

Me: HEY!!! I wasn't that lazy today. I made chili for dinner...AND...I survived the apocalypse. What did you do today?

DMad: I worked my full-time job, did all the snowblowing...AND did it while carrying our daughter...INSIDE MY BODY!!

Me: I, uh-huh, umm...have you seen the light bulbs for the living room ceiling fan???

This is an actual conversation we had, that had us laughing.

I have no problem with people that have every channel available, or gaming systems in their house, but if that's ALL you give your kids to do, then it should be no surprise that they are socially disconnected from the real world. That they have become desensitized to violence and see life as disposable. In a round about way, you've "disposed" of them. Outta sight, outta mind.
Thoughts??? Or am I completely off my rocker and speaking gibberish??

I'm an avid video gamer but that's only because my mom was. I used to watch her play Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario when I was about three years old, probably even younger. Started playing video games when I was six.

I don't know what it is. I've had every video game console you can possibly imagine but I never got into the excruciatingly violent games. Gears of War, Halo, even the zombie games. Just never did it. The most dangerous game I played was Goldeneye, which I've been playing since I was 7.

My parents really just let me choose my own path and with all of these convenient stress relievers at my disposal, I chose Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, and sports games. Still do to this day.

It's interesting how different upbringings work. I actually spent a LOT of time in my room away from my family until I was about 13, but I never drifted from simple games. And as I think back, I find that weird, because the same cannot be said about those I grew up with who may have been closer to their families.

Your story sounds just like mine a decade or so later except it was my older brother introducing me to games.
