Some nice stats surprised they are not #1 in hard rock album also the stuff they consider rock kind of prevents vh from doing better in the rock album section.
Janie Liszewski did the IMPOSSIBLE she helped Eddie Van Halen get better. Deal with it.

I definitely think the charts for their style paints a clearer picture in terms of their success overall. I still love the album...one of my favorites ever actually.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Billboard has a strange way of calculating things.
Some end of the year charts are calculated more by how many weeks they were on the chart than by actual sales.Others by airplay ,tours and sales etc. like the top artists one.
In which case on airplay alone, most rock acts would suffer somewhat compared to say a dance act.The average airplay for a top rock song is 1/10th of a typical dance hit.

Van Halen did pretty good overall.Great album, successful tour.
Let's remember that they didn't do any super cheapo sales(99 cents) like some other acts this year to boost their numbers or spend a gazillion dollars on promotion.
So most of their sales are full value or close to it.
I would think in the Usa they'll finish the year over 410,000 which is pretty good in this day and age.

Who calculates the downloads sold? That number I would like to see.

There was a thread when the album first came out where many thought ADKOT would go platinum, guess that didn't happen.

    Absolutely!!

The math is pretty fascinating. (That might be the only time I've ever expressed that sentiment.)

*During the record industry's peak years (1998-2001,) yearly albums sales totals maxed out at just under 800 million albums sold per year.

    * In 2005, the figure was approximately 620 million sold (U.S.)

    * This year - 2012 - just under 300 million albums were sold in the U.S. This is a decline of over 35 million albums from last year, 2011; and over 75 million albums from 2009.

    * In terms of ratio, selling 410,000 albums in 2012 is the equivalent of selling over 1 million albums - going platinum - in 2005 (on par with the sales stats of The Rolling Stones last studio album, "A Bigger Bang.")

"Respectable," as Mick Jagger said in song, in an industry where the definition of "respectable" is changing very quickly.

What's even more shocking - I remember seeing them at some point, but I didn't look into the numbers during the past few years - is the decline of "rock" sales. 410,000 "rock" units sold in 2012 is the ratio equivalent of somewhere between double and triple platinum, just a decade ago.
