Extra-Loud TV Commercials Officially Banned by FCC

Extra-Loud TV Commercials Officially Banned by FCC

Watching TV has been a chore in recent years – and not just because of all the bad programming (Zing!). You’ve noticed it: you’re watching a show at what seems like a reasonable volume when all of a sudden, a commercial comes blaring in across your speakers. From there it’s a mad scramble for the remote, to bring relative peace and quiet back to your abode.

Well, after living under the tyranny of TV ads that can literally shout their sales pitch into your ear, we celebrate a day of liberation: TV advertisers are no longer allowed to bombard us with “extra-loud” commercials.

The ban went into effect at midnight, as part of new mandates handed down by the Federal Communications Commission, which adopted the new rule a year ago. The long-short of it is that commercials must now (gasp!) maintain the same relative volume as the programs they air during – though, there is plenty of wiggle room within that mandate that I’m sure will be exploited. Certain shows are pretty loud and obnoxious (Jersey Shore, Bad Girls Club) so it could be argued their advertisements can be too. And what the exact definition of “relative volume” is, is anybody’s guess…

The FCC wants help enforcing the ruling from its on-the-street snitches (read: you): If you still encounter TV commercials that are assaulting your eardrums, you can call a number to report that advertiser (1-888-TELL-FCC). So, if there is a particular commercial that has really been trying your patience, now could be the time to drop a dime in revenge…

Hopefully, we are entering a new era of TV viewing in which our eardrums are safe. The only question now is: what trick will the advertising world next invent to keep commercials all up in your face?

I'll see if this is true on Sunday when I'm watching football, for that is the time it is most obnoxiously evident.

Can we take the next step of banning all Old Navy and Ross ads.....regardless of sound levels?

Start banning the GEICO Gecko. IMO, he is an annoying mf'er. As for quiet commercials... it's about damn time.

Over here, the television companies CONTINUALLY deny that this phenomenon takes place, insisting that the sound on the adverts is merely more "high definition" as opposed to being extraordinarily loud and therefore refuse to address the issue...Twat-arses.

Does this also apply to radio as well as TV?

Notice how the networks never were gong to do anything about this on their own. It took the Feds to bring some peace back to our living rooms. Something the fucking networks were nevr concerned about.

I'm ready to report their ass for allowing any commericals, for themselves, or anyone else, to run at those higher volumes!

Radio doesn't do that. With all the processing that takes place at a radio station, it makes all levels hitting the airwaves equal. Unless the station you listen to is using sound board output, and by-passing any processing. Most stations use a "compellor/limiter." The engineer sets it up to take low levels and bring them up to a median level. And takes hot levels and knocks them back to that median level.

As for TV ads...I've noticed the first ad of the break isn't that loud, but by the 2nd and 3rd, I'm reaching for the remote to turn down the volume still.

I disagree. Whatever radio is doing, the adds are indeed louder. Either recorded or played luder, but I know what I hear listening to a talk show, then they go their 'loud' bumper music, and I have to turn the damn thing down. Then, when they come back to the talk show, I have to turn it up again.

Uo and Down and Up and Down..... I shouldn't have to go through this.... FCC are you listening ???

It sounds like the station's engineer isn't doing his job. We had that problem too. All the studios have lights that flash when the audio is too low. We were constantly having that problem with some audio being too low, some too high. Our engineer hooked up a "compellor" that adjusts the audio almost instantaneously. That way levels are always consistent and normalized.

Commercials were mastered loud to pop and get your attention.

    Glad it has been banned.

I don't think this is being enforced yet. Commercials still seem a lot louder then the TV shows.

I can deal with the volume of TV ads.....but could someone please do something about that "Kars for Kids" jingle that plays about 18,000 times a day on the radio.....

Seriously..... every time that thing plays I feel the urge to drive into oncoming traffic....
