Default Dave's Book: "Crazy from the Heat"

I've been wanting to get this book for quite a while, but now they are hard to find in "New" or "Like New" condition -- unless one is prepared to spend big $$.

From what I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong), the original hardcover was published by Hyperion Books in 1997. And it had a dust jacket. Is that right?

It looks like there were some reprints. Does anyone have the paperback reprint from Ebury Press in 2000? Is that version a lot smaller in size?

I'm debating which copy I want to get and how much I am willing to spend.

    I appreciate any insights.

I asked for it for Christmas and told the relatives to just buy it used on Amazon. I don't understand why someone doesn't have this thing in print.

I've got the paperback version; bought it about a year ago - exactly the same as the hardback, brand new, dead cheap - but it was from Amazon.co.uk.

Can you tell me the page count? Is it Ebury Press?

I've got the hard copy, it was given to me by Dave himself, and signed!
I'll never get rid of it, I like to go back, and reread a chapter or two from time to time!
    Very good read indeed!

It's this one, hun...I can't tell you any more than that as I recently moved house and my copy is packed up in a box somewhere.

Hope that's of some help...You could always order it from amazon.co.uk and pay for international shipping if it's proving difficult to obtain in the States!

I bought a hard back copy a few years ago off of eBay. I'd say they'll probably be your best bet of finding one. The book has 359 pages in it. I wouldn't necessarily call it a "quick read" either, mainly because of the writing style. Once you're in it, you'll find yourself re-reading about stuff to fully understand where he's coming from. I believe Dave had a ghost writer helping along with the book if not mistaken. There's some really cool pics in there you probably haven't seen anywhere else too. One things for sure, it's a great read. Definitely not boring!

I have a first print edition, and it was Hyperion as the publishing house based in New York City.

Near the end: This is not a recitation of what I did, you already know that I did it. This is why I did it or how it was done--nine-and-a-half times out of ten, being clearly not what you expected. Me neither.

    Last paragraph reads like this:

This book is not for simple spectators. If you can get from front to back, you will have learned, felt, and experienced much of what I did. Maybe you'll laugh, or feel some wistfulness. Some of it might get you horny, and some of it might just piss you off. Now that's a story.

Funniest anecdote in it has to be the 'hairbrush incident' - for those who haven't read it, I won't say any more other than it's a classic - worth buying the book for that corker alone!

I bought a hard copy like new years ago, but for all but big VH or Dave fans it's really not a very good read at all. He thinks he's brilliant but it's just a convolouted mess 90% of the time. I like it, but Dave won't be teaching writing classes anytime soon.

There was a very funny TV interview with Dave where, upon hearing the host's comment that the book, "tends to ramble", he responded querulously, "tends?" , suggesting that he is perhaps slightly aware of its shortcomings!

Oh no doubt, I just find that we often become a bit delusional in praising our heros haha. Dave's book is anything but linear, which is what makes it entertaining at times, but otherwise it's frustrating.

I remember when he had his radio show, a caller asked him if they ever played "Dirty Movies" live, I think that was the tune, and Dave went into this great big huge rant about VH and the value of their music, and finally the caller said again, much more frankly, "did you guys play it?!" and Dave said yes, even though they never had as far as anyone can confirm.

I liked DLR's book, but yes, he tends to ramble on...and on...and on at times.

The manuscript he handed his editor was supposedly over a thousand pages, so maybe they cut as much rambling out as they could, but damn.

The best stories were the short ones that took only a page or two. Like having group sex with the strippers in the bed covered in cash. Now THAT'S a story.

Or the time VH went to a Parisian brothel. When he rambled on about Business 101 or anti-Semitism, he got bland.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Given how high they were for the most part, perhaps we should be grateful that he can remember getting up on stage at ALL!!!

This book was shown and mentioned on the tv sitcom, Newsradio, back in the late 90's.

Phil Hartman's charactor walked into the office with a copy of the book and joked that he had no idea who DLR was, and said that he particularly enjoyed chapter 3, which is the one about the 5 strippers in bed covered in money. L.O.L.

I believe the ghost writer was Henry Rollins, or he states it was himself in an interview where he talks about meeting Sammy and wanting to hate him, but he can't because he was such a nice guy.
