I think VH are a little too old to allow Mutt to run all over them. They would send him home because Mutt would be telling them that something sucks or needs to be redone or something.

VH's greatest asset in the studio has always been their ability to play the "music" part LIVE, and that kinda goes against the grain with what Mutt likes to do.

but I would give anything to see them burn thru something and see their reactions when Mutt would say something like "Uh, let's do that one more time"

I agree that every band needs someone in the studio that is going to punk them out in the studio--somebody who's not afraid to say "it sucks" to them. Van Halen just doesn't seem like the kind of band that would be hip to that idea. Even though that is EXACTLY what they probably need.

Mutt Lange is the king of the over-dub though. One of the greatest things about the DLR era of Van Halen is that most of the material had that loose feel to it that comes from not over-dubbing it to death. If you've got the talent and the fire to nail it down live, why bleed the energy out of it by doing it over and over again?

I would say that Mutt Lange might be the kind of producer who could help if VH were recording with Sammy again, because Eddie's writing and recording style evolved towards the end of DLR's tenure to a place that Lange could have meshed.

But that over-structuring would work against what DLR and VH have proven to be so great at in my opinion.

Better yet, let's ask her if she'll sing with the boys!

It would give a whole new meaning to "Everybody Wants Some" wouldn't it?

Yeah, the best thing about early VH records were always the "liveness" of it--just done live right there in the studio. Lay it down, and move on. Lots of energy.

Another great "live" record is The Black Crowes 'Southern Harmony Musical Companion'--which was made in about 7 days. That record to this day is one of my faves--just ask Lead Synth about my "Crowes fest" from new year's eve

to me, recording a group is always about capturing a "moment"

I believe that Bob Rock's strength is with guitars and I can't see him trying to mess with Eddie on that. Mutt Lange, and Glenn Ballard for that matter, are Atilla the Hun songwriters that structure lyrics and instruments their way or else. That's why I really don't like either one of them. I think they take the "essence" of the original band away with all that input.

If Mutt Lang produced Van-Halens next record, it would be there #1 selling record, but all of us old style die hard VH fans would hate it.

Glenn pretty much said it all. I always liked a more raw and loose feeling in rock. Def Leppard was never about that, VH was.
