Default I wonder what Ed's music would be like if he could count...

I'm sitting here at work listening to a crap load of VH and I think most of us on these boards realize that although Ed is a master of solo's, his Rhythm work is just un-fucking believable.

All of his off-beat shit is mind blowing, yet the groove he maintains just kicks ass. I don't know how many interviews I've read with him and how he states he can't count worth a shit, but it got me thinking, just how different would his music creation be if in fact he never went off-beat.

Fuck, Unchained's rhythm alone is the perfect example. We all have read his "falling down the stairs and landing on his feet" quotes, but I always applied that to his solo's.

    Thoughts?

Yes, his rhythm work and fills are much better than his solos. He's just got such an odd sense of timing and rhythm, he really grooves like nobody else. I think if Eddie could count he would sound more generic, more like everyone else.

Ed's licks are slipping and sliding around the beat all the time.

But he DOES know exactly where he is at all times...the proof of this, is that he can get back to a specific quarter or eight note whenever he needs to. He also does have the luxury of Big Al... that's a nice advantage.

    Edward's complex guitar rhythms...
    could be compared to...
    Robert Plant's vocal rhythms

Try to sing perfectly along with Plant... it's a lot of fun.

    One more thing...
Don't forget that Ed is often seen tapping his foot... for some internal control.

I personally think he was joking when said he can't count, given his classical background

Yeah, there's a difference between being unable to count, and not really needing to count. I would submit that most of the world's best dancers don't "count," per se.

Rhythm is a beautiful and ineffable thing.

Ed is like Hank Aaron with the weird batting stance and the funky swing. It works, leave it alone.

People seem to often mention his "classical background". Really, how much does this influence him now? He can't even read music. Didn't he just take piano lessons as a kid? I took piano lessons as a kid and can play a little piano. Am I classically influenced?

I guess I am just wondering if this is a little blown out of proportion? It sounds sexy, but . . .

I think his piano background has helped him enormously in the songwriting department. Many of his contemporaries in the 80s could play fast, and knew every trick in the book, but their songs ended up sounding hollow and thin. Eddie knows how to write songs--he's not just a bunch of flashy tricks. He has plenty of tricks, too, but they are merely the icing on the cake.

He does it when he solos, too. Ed taps his foot more than any other guitarist I've ever seen. I remember how much that stood out to me when I bought Live Without a Net when it was new. I don't know whether he does it absent-mindedly because his whole body is just sort of "feeling" the time or he does it conciously as an aid but you can't watch him for long without seeing it.

I just went to the LWAN video on youtube to find an example and literally the first place I randomly stopped (at 3:34) there's Ed tapping his foot as usual. I've never seen any other guitarist really do that to such an extent.

So... the cat's outta the bag! Just in case ANYONE has ever wondered why DLR can't remember the lyrics: It is because he has lost the 'one'. Ed and Al have turned the rhythm so sideways that they have lost DLR. THAT IS WHY HE 'CAN'T REMEMBER THE LYRICS'!

You can stop wondering, it's not blown out of proportion. He didn't just have piano lessons as a kid.
