Van Halen has beat its own Record?

"Van Halen has beat its own record?..."

First off, just to be 100% clear here, the opinions in this thread are just that, opinions. Your mileage may obviously vary....but, my band mate and I the other day were thinking back, and trying to visualize when a Rock Record had been released that had the same or better raw impact and super-high quality as ADKOT.

    We couldn't think of one.

We thought of one big rock band after another, and asked ourselves, "when was their last killer record?". Almost every time we couldn't remember back that far, and eventually realized the last record that was at par, or better than ADKOT was actually Van Halen's F.U.C.K.. So in effect we figured that ADKOT was the greatest rock record in 21 years, and that VH had had no competition for 2 decades, but themselves, when they released "Truth" earlier this year.

We checked every major rock band we could think of, and figured out in our opinions the release year of their last incredible classic record. This is what we got below...

Is this some kind of empirical proof that Van Halen has "earned" a lofty stature in rock music history. Maybe yes?

Well, I agree with you! ADKOT is my favorite ROCK album in at least 20 years. Can't think of anything I like more since '91 or even earlier. IMO.

I am not so sure in saying FUCK is VH's last classic record when IMO, Balance is a better album. However both of them pale in comparison to some of the classic albums you have listed.

I mean I love VH but FUCK isn't close to at least half of the albums you have listed.

Good album? Yes. Great? In the eye of the beholder. Classic? Nope

FUCK is an absolute classic record to my ears.

But, either way, whether you say Balance or FUCK, its really a pathetic commentary on the state of the music industry since the early 90s

In the hard rock world we have been inundated with total crap for so many years it really makes you wonder what the hell has actually happened.

    We are in free fall.

I agree with you in general compared to the hard rock world a lot of us grew up in. But that's just our perspective. I remember clearly when I was a teen in the 80s (I graduated high school in 1986) tons of older people around me told me rock music had been dead for a long time. They looked at most of those albums you listed with the same disdain that you (and many of us) look at modern records. And my dad loved and still loves rock from 1956 to 1965 and he thought rock in the 70s sucked. It's all about what you grew up with for most people. But I still find a lot to like out there.

Basically what you're saying is ADKOT is the first album in 20 or more years that sounds like it fits with 1975-1985 era rock. That may be true, but to a lot of people that doesn't mean that it's better than what's come since. It's simply stylistically similar to music that hasn't been in style for at least 20 years.

    I really couldn't disagree more.

A lot of great music has come out since 1991. I can name a lot of albums that were better than ADKOT this year alone, that one may not agree are BETTER per se but would still enjoy very much. That's just in 2012, there have been a lot more.

Rock was in a bad state between 1998 and 2003, but free fall is a gross exaggeration. Maybe for you, but your window is very narrow.
