Default The Roots homage to EVH at ACL 2012

I thought you guys might get a small kick out of this, but as an Austin resident, I did go to the ACL Festival this past weekend. Saw lots of great bands (and lots of horrific bands).

I like The Roots so we checked out their entire show. Very impressively, they opened with a Beastie's song in tribute to MCA. That was awesome. A little later in their set, they played a short version of "Sweet Child of Mine" -- I thought it was so awful. I do not know why they did that.

But they redeemed themselves. At the end of one of their long jams, the lead guitarist got about a free-form one-minute solo to himself where he finger tapped like crazy, did the palm-raking harmonics trick, pick squeals, whammy bar stuff. I'm standing there going "Am I the only person that knows what's going on here?!" I couldn't believe it -- I was really thrilled that this guy was going off so long EVH-style. Right at the end, he stopped abruptly and yelled to the crowd "You, really, got, me!" MC-style.

And I guess that's about as close as VH will ever get to ACL.

Hats off to The Roots guitarist though for his prolonged homage to Ed.

The Roots are incredible. I've been following them since I was in high school in Philly.

Cap'n Kirk can play the shit out of the guitar. That guitar solo has been a regular part of their shows ever since he joined the band in '02.

I think the Eddie homage is a little thin, though. I mean, the breadth of Eddie's influence is wide, but in regards to the solo he regularly does, he can just straight up play. He has his own style and just because he throws in some tapping and whammy bar stuff doesn't mean he's deliberately tipping his hat to Ed. But the "You, Really, Got, Me" shout out was nice.

Regardless, great to see that you dig the Roots. I think they're great. For those of you who normally hate hip hop, I'd still give the Roots a go. They have a very diverse background of influences and they're prolific.

BTW, Eddie was indeed a major influence on him. He said when he was 7 y.o. Eddie's guitar and the power behind it were very inspiring.

On another note: Eddie invited him to the Cafe Wha? performance this year, too. Just another huge fan getting some love from the maestro.

He was finger tapping with his right hand and smiling really big -- it was overtly obvious all about Ed, especially with the YRGM thing. That's cool -- he obviously loves him. He does the palm scrape harmonics thing too (if you happen to know what that is -- if not, it's in "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" after the solo during the last break before the drums kick in before the last verse).

It was sweet. The thing that sucked slightly was that I knew looking the people around me -- mostly younger -- it was going right over their head. Oh well. Stupid young people.

Forgive me, but isn't being in a band full time, considered having a job?
